New Living Translation | King James Bible |
To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction. | 1Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish. |
The LORD approves of those who are good, but he condemns those who plan wickedness. | 2A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn. |
Wickedness never brings stability, but the godly have deep roots. | 3A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved. |
A worthy wife is a crown for her husband, but a disgraceful woman is like cancer in his bones. | 4A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones. |
The plans of the godly are just; the advice of the wicked is treacherous. | 5The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit. |
The words of the wicked are like a murderous ambush, but the words of the godly save lives. | 6The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them. |
The wicked die and disappear, but the family of the godly stands firm. | 7The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand. |
A sensible person wins admiration, but a warped mind is despised. | 8A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised. |
Better to be an ordinary person with a servant than to be self-important but have no food. | 9He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread. |
The godly care for their animals, but the wicked are always cruel. | 10A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. |
A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies has no sense. | 11He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding. |
Thieves are jealous of each other’s loot, but the godly are well rooted and bear their own fruit. | 12The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit. |
The wicked are trapped by their own words, but the godly escape such trouble. | 13The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble. |
Wise words bring many benefits, and hard work brings rewards. | 14A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him. |
Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others. | 15The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise. |
A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted. | 16A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame. |
An honest witness tells the truth; a false witness tells lies. | 17He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit. |
Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. | 18There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. |
Truthful words stand the test of time, but lies are soon exposed. | 19The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment. |
Deceit fills hearts that are plotting evil; joy fills hearts that are planning peace! | 20Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellers of peace is joy. |
No harm comes to the godly, but the wicked have their fill of trouble. | 21There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief. |
The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth. | 22Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. |
The wise don’t make a show of their knowledge, but fools broadcast their foolishness. | 23A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness. |
Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave. | 24The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute. |
Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up. | 25Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad. |
The godly give good advice to their friends; the wicked lead them astray. | 26The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them. |
Lazy people don’t even cook the game they catch, but the diligent make use of everything they find. | 27The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious. |
The way of the godly leads to life; that path does not lead to death. | 28In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death. |
