New International Version | NET Bible |
For the director of music. To the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks." Of David. A miktam. When the Philistines had seized him in Gath. Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack. | 1For the music director; according to the yonath-elem-rechovim style; a prayer of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me! All day long hostile enemies are tormenting me. |
My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me. | 2Those who anticipate my defeat attack me all day long. Indeed, many are fighting against me, O Exalted One. |
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. | 3When I am afraid, I trust in you. |
In God, whose word I praise-- in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? | 4In God--I boast in his promise--in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? |
All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin. | 5All day long they cause me trouble; they make a habit of plotting my demise. |
They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps, hoping to take my life. | 6They stalk and lurk; they watch my every step, as they prepare to take my life. |
Because of their wickedness do not let them escape; in your anger, God, bring the nations down. | 7Because they are bent on violence, do not let them escape! In your anger bring down the nations, O God! |
Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll -- are they not in your record? | 8You keep track of my misery. Put my tears in your leather container! Are they not recorded in your scroll? |
Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me. | 9My enemies will turn back when I cry out to you for help; I know that God is on my side. |
In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise-- | 10In God--I boast in his promise--in the LORD--I boast in his promise-- |
in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me? | 11in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me? |
I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you. | 12I am obligated to fulfill the vows I made to you, O God; I will give you the thank-offerings you deserve, |
For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. | 13when you deliver my life from death. You keep my feet from stumbling, so that I might serve God as I enjoy life. |
