For the music director; a psalm of David. Listen to me, O God, as I offer my lament! Protect my life from the enemy's terrifying attacks. | 1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm. God, hear my voice when I complain. Protect my life from the terror of the enemy. |
Hide me from the plots of evil men, from the crowd of evildoers. | 2Hide me from the scheming of wicked people, from the mob of evildoers, |
They sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge, | 3who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim bitter words like arrows, |
in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. | 4shooting from concealed places at the innocent. They shoot at him suddenly and are not afraid. |
They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast, "Who will see them?" | 5They encourage each other in an evil plan; they talk about hiding traps and say," Who will see them?" |
They devise unjust schemes; they disguise a well-conceived plot. Man's inner thoughts cannot be discovered. | 6They devise crimes and say," We have perfected a secret plan." The inner man and the heart are mysterious. |
But God will shoot at them; suddenly they will be wounded by an arrow. | 7But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly, they will be wounded. |
Their slander will bring about their demise. All who see them will shudder, | 8They will be made to stumble; their own tongues work against them. All who see them will shake their heads. |
and all people will fear. They will proclaim what God has done, and reflect on his deeds. | 9Then everyone will fear and will tell about God's work, for they will understand what He has done. |
The godly will rejoice in the LORD and take shelter in him. All the morally upright will boast. | 10The righteous one rejoices in the LORD and takes refuge in Him; all those who are upright in heart will offer praise. |
