NET Bible | English Standard Version |
A musical composition by David, which he sang to the LORD concerning a Benjaminite named Cush. O LORD my God, in you I have taken shelter. Deliver me from all who chase me! Rescue me! | 1O LORD my God, in you do I take refuge; save me from all my pursuers and deliver me, |
Otherwise they will rip me to shreds like a lion; they will tear me to bits and no one will be able to rescue me. | 2lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces, with none to deliver. |
O LORD my God, if I have done what they say, or am guilty of unjust actions, | 3O LORD my God, if I have done this, if there is wrong in my hands, |
or have wronged my ally, or helped his lawless enemy, | 4if I have repaid my friend with evil or plundered my enemy without cause, |
may an enemy relentlessly chase me and catch me; may he trample me to death and leave me lying dishonored in the dust. (Selah) | 5let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it, and let him trample my life to the ground and lay my glory in the dust. Selah |
Stand up angrily, LORD! Rise up with raging fury against my enemies! Wake up for my sake and execute the judgment you have decreed for them! | 6Arise, O LORD, in your anger; lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies; awake for me; you have appointed a judgment. |
The countries are assembled all around you; take once more your rightful place over them! | 7Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered about you; over it return on high. |
The LORD judges the nations. Vindicate me, LORD, because I am innocent, because I am blameless, O Exalted One! | 8The LORD judges the peoples; judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and according to the integrity that is in me. |
May the evil deeds of the wicked come to an end! But make the innocent secure, O righteous God, you who examine inner thoughts and motives! | 9Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end, and may you establish the righteous— you who test the minds and hearts, O righteous God! |
The Exalted God is my shield, the one who delivers the morally upright. | 10My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart. |
God is a just judge; he is angry throughout the day. | 11God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day. |
If a person does not repent, God sharpens his sword and prepares to shoot his bow. | 12If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword; he has bent and readied his bow; |
He prepares to use deadly weapons against him; he gets ready to shoot flaming arrows. | 13he has prepared for him his deadly weapons, making his arrows fiery shafts. |
See the one who is pregnant with wickedness, who conceives destructive plans, and gives birth to harmful lies-- | 14Behold, the wicked man conceives evil and is pregnant with mischief and gives birth to lies. |
he digs a pit and then falls into the hole he has made. | 15He makes a pit, digging it out, and falls into the hole that he has made. |
He becomes the victim of his own destructive plans and the violence he intended for others falls on his own head. | 16His mischief returns upon his own head, and on his own skull his violence descends. |
I will thank the LORD for his justice; I will sing praises to the sovereign LORD! | 17I will give to the LORD the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the LORD, the Most High. |
