For the music director; according to the al-tashcheth style; a prayer of David, written when Saul sent men to surround his house and murder him. Deliver me from my enemies, my God! Protect me from those who attack me! | 1Rescue me from my enemies, my God; protect me from those who rise up against me. |
Deliver me from evildoers! Rescue me from violent men! | 2Rescue me from those who practice sin, and save me from men of bloodshed. |
For look, they wait to ambush me; powerful men stalk me, but not because I have rebelled or sinned, O LORD. | 3Because look, LORD, they set an ambush for me. Powerful men attack me, but not because of any sin or rebellion of mine. |
Though I have done nothing wrong, they are anxious to attack. Spring into action and help me! Take notice of me! | 4For no fault of mine, they run and take up a position. Awake to help me, and take notice. |
You, O LORD God, the invincible warrior, the God of Israel, rouse yourself and punish all the nations! Have no mercy on any treacherous evildoers! (Selah) | 5LORD God of Armies, you are the God of Israel. Rise up to punish all the nations; do not show favor to any wicked traitors. Selah |
They return in the evening; they growl like a dog and prowl around outside the city. | 6They return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. |
Look, they hurl insults at me and openly threaten to kill me, for they say, "Who hears?" | 7Look, they spew from their mouths--sharp words from their lips. "For who," they say, "will hear?" |
But you, O LORD, laugh in disgust at them; you taunt all the nations. | 8But you laugh at them, LORD; you ridicule all the nations. |
You are my source of strength! I will wait for you! For God is my refuge. | 9I will keep watch for you, my strength, because God is my stronghold. |
The God who loves me will help me; God will enable me to triumph over my enemies. | 10My faithful God will come to meet me; God will let me look down on my adversaries. |
Do not strike them dead suddenly, because then my people might forget the lesson. Use your power to make them homeless vagabonds and then bring them down, O Lord who shields us! | 11Do not kill them; otherwise, my people will forget. By your power, make them homeless wanderers and bring them down, Lord, our shield. |
They speak sinful words. So let them be trapped by their own pride and by the curses and lies they speak! | 12For the sin of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. They utter curses and lies. |
Angrily wipe them out! Wipe them out so they vanish! Let them know that God rules in Jacob and to the ends of the earth! (Selah) | 13Consume them in rage; consume them until they are gone. Then people will know throughout the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah |
They return in the evening; they growl like a dog and prowl around outside the city. | 14And they return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. |
They wander around looking for something to eat; they refuse to sleep until they are full. | 15They scavenge for food; they growl if they are not satisfied. |
As for me, I will sing about your strength; I will praise your loyal love in the morning. For you are my refuge and my place of shelter when I face trouble. | 16But I will sing of your strength and will joyfully proclaim your faithful love in the morning. For you have been a stronghold for me, a refuge in my day of trouble. |
You are my source of strength! I will sing praises to you! For God is my refuge, the God who loves me. | 17To you, my strength, I sing praises, because God is my stronghold--my faithful God. |
