"Man, born of woman, lives but a few days, and they are full of trouble. 1“Man, who is born of woman, is short of days and full of trouble.
He grows up like a flower and then withers away; he flees like a shadow, and does not remain. 2Like a flower, he comes forth, then withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure.
Do you fix your eye on such a one? And do you bring me before you for judgment? 3Do You open Your eyes to one like this? Will You bring him into judgment before You?
Who can make a clean thing come from an unclean? No one! 4Who can bring out clean from unclean? No one!
Since man's days are determined, the number of his months is under your control; you have set his limit and he cannot pass it. 5Since his days are determined and the number of his months is with You, and since You have set limits that he cannot exceed,
Look away from him and let him desist, until he fulfills his time like a hired man. 6look away from him and let him rest, so he can enjoy his day as a hired hand.
"But there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail. 7For there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its tender shoots will not fail.
Although its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump begins to die in the soil, 8If its roots grow old in the ground and its stump dies in the soil,
at the scent of water it will flourish and put forth shoots like a new plant. 9at the scent of water it will bud and put forth twigs like a sapling.
But man dies and is powerless; he expires--and where is he? 10But a man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last, and where is he?
As water disappears from the sea, or a river drains away and dries up, 11As water disappears from the sea and a river becomes parched and dry,
so man lies down and does not rise; until the heavens are no more, they will not awake nor arise from their sleep. 12so a man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no more, he will not be awakened or roused from sleep.
"O that you would hide me in Sheol, and conceal me till your anger has passed! O that you would set me a time and then remember me! 13If only You would hide me in Sheol and conceal me until Your anger has passed! If only You would appoint a time for me and then remember me!
If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait until my release comes. 14When a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, until my renewal comes.
You will call and I--I will answer you; you will long for the creature you have made. 15You will call, and I will answer; You will desire the work of Your hands.
"Surely now you count my steps; then you would not mark my sin. 16For then You would count my steps, but would not keep track of my sin.
My offenses would be sealed up in a bag; you would cover over my sin. 17My transgression would be sealed in a bag, and You would cover over my iniquity.
But as a mountain falls away and crumbles, and as a rock will be removed from its place, 18But as a mountain erodes and crumbles and a rock is dislodged from its place,
as water wears away stones, and torrents wash away the soil, so you destroy man's hope. 19as water wears away the stones and torrents wash away the soil, so You destroy a man’s hope.
You overpower him once for all, and he departs; you change his appearance and send him away. 20You forever overpower him, and he passes on; You change his countenance and send him away.
If his sons are honored, he does not know it; if they are brought low, he does not see it. 21If his sons receive honor, he does not know it; if they are brought low, he is unaware.
Only his flesh has pain for himself, and he mourns for himself." 22He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself.”
