New American Standard Bible 1995 | New Living Translation |
Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, | 1Then the LORD spoke to Jonah a second time: |
"Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you." | 2“Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh, and deliver the message I have given you.” |
So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days' walk. | 3This time Jonah obeyed the LORD’s command and went to Nineveh, a city so large that it took three days to see it all. |
Then Jonah began to go through the city one day's walk; and he cried out and said, "Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown." | 4On the day Jonah entered the city, he shouted to the crowds: “Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed!” |
Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them. | 5The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow. |
When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the ashes. | 6When the king of Nineveh heard what Jonah was saying, he stepped down from his throne and took off his royal robes. He dressed himself in burlap and sat on a heap of ashes. |
He issued a proclamation and it said, "In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water. | 7Then the king and his nobles sent this decree throughout the city: “No one, not even the animals from your herds and flocks, may eat or drink anything at all. |
"But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands. | 8People and animals alike must wear garments of mourning, and everyone must pray earnestly to God. They must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence. |
"Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning anger so that we will not perish." | 9Who can tell? Perhaps even yet God will change his mind and hold back his fierce anger from destroying us.” |
When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it. | 10When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened. |
