Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him,1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him: We ask you, brothers and sisters,
that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.2not to be easily upset or troubled, either by a prophecy or by a message or by a letter supposedly from us, alleging that the day of the Lord has come.
Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,3Don't let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God's temple, proclaiming that he himself is God.
Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things?5Don't you remember that when I was still with you I used to tell you about this?
And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed.6And you know what currently restrains him, so that he will be revealed in his time.
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way.7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way,
Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming;8and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and will bring him to nothing at the appearance of his coming.
that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders,9The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan's working, with all kinds of false miracles, signs, and wonders,
and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved.10and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved.
For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false,11For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie,
in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.12so that all will be condemned--those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness.
But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.13But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth.
It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.14He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, whether by what we said or what we wrote.
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace,16May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace,
comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word.
