Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, | 1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to Him, we ask you, brothers, |
that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. | 2not to be easily disconcerted or alarmed by any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come. |
Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, | 3Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed. |
who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. | 4He will oppose and exalt himself above every so-called god or object of worship. So he will seat himself in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. |
Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? | 5Do you not remember that I told you these things while I was still with you? |
And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. | 6And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. |
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. | 7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one who now restrains it will continue until he is taken out of the way. |
Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; | 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will slay with the breath of His mouth and annihilate by the majesty of His arrival. |
that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, | 9The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the working of Satan, with every kind of power, sign, and false wonder, |
and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. | 10and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them. |
For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, | 11For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion so that they believe the lie, |
in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness. | 12in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness. |
But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. | 13But we should always thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning to be saved by the sanctification of the Spirit and by faith in the truth. |
It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 14To this He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us. | 15Therefore, brothers, stand firm and cling to the traditions we taught you, whether by speech or by letter. |
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, | 16Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who by grace has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope, |
comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word. | 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good word and deed. |
