Then Job continued his discourse and said,1Job continued his discourse:
"As God lives, who has taken away my right, And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul,2“As surely as God lives, who has deprived me of justice—the Almighty, who has embittered my soul—
For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils,3as long as my breath is still within me and the breath of God remains in my nostrils,
My lips certainly will not speak unjustly, Nor will my tongue mutter deceit.4my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will not utter deceit.
"Far be it from me that I should declare you right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me.5I will never say that you are right; I will maintain my integrity until I die.
"I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not reproach any of my days.6I will cling to my righteousness and never let go. As long as I live, my conscience will not accuse me.
"May my enemy be as the wicked And my opponent as the unjust.7May my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unjust.
"For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, When God requires his life?8For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?
"Will God hear his cry When distress comes upon him?9Will God hear his cry when distress comes upon him?
"Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times?10Will he delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times?
"I will instruct you in the power of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.11I will instruct you in the power of God. I will not conceal the ways of the Almighty.
"Behold, all of you have seen it; Why then do you act foolishly?12Surely all of you have seen it for yourselves. Why then do you keep up this empty talk?
"This is the portion of a wicked man from God, And the inheritance which tyrants receive from the Almighty.13This is the wicked man’s portion from God—the heritage the ruthless receive from the Almighty.
"Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; And his descendants will not be satisfied with bread.14Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; and his offspring will never have enough food.
"His survivors will be buried because of the plague, And their widows will not be able to weep.15His survivors will be buried by the plague, and their widows will not weep for them.
"Though he piles up silver like dust And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay,16Though he heaps up silver like dust and piles up a wardrobe like clay,
He may prepare it, but the just will wear it And the innocent will divide the silver.17what he lays up, the righteous will wear, and his silver will be divided by the innocent.
"He has built his house like the spider's web, Or as a hut which the watchman has made.18The house he built is like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut set up by a watchman.
"He lies down rich, but never again; He opens his eyes, and it is no longer.19He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone.
"Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night.20Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest sweeps him away in the night.
"The east wind carries him away, and he is gone, For it whirls him away from his place.21The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place.
"For it will hurl at him without sparing; He will surely try to flee from its power.22It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power.
"Men will clap their hands at him And will hiss him from his place.23It claps its hands at him and hisses him out of his place.
