Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.1Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.2We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body.
Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can guide the whole animal.
Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.4Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot is inclined.
So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!5In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a spark sets a great forest ablaze.
And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.6The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man,
But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;9With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.
from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.10Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be!
Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.12My brothers, can a fig tree grow olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.14But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth.
This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.15Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice.
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.17But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere.
And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.18Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness.
