To the chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him. Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me. | 1For the choir director: "Do Not Destroy." A Davidic Miktam. When Saul sent agents to watch the house and kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, my God; protect me from those who rise up against me. |
Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men. | 2Deliver me from those who practice sin, and save me from men of bloodshed. |
For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD. | 3 LORD, look! They set an ambush for me. Powerful men attack me, but not because of any sin or rebellion of mine. |
They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold. | 4For no fault of mine, they run and take up a position. Awake to help me, and take notice. |
Thou therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah. | 5 LORD God of Hosts, You are the God of Israel, rise up to punish all the nations; do not show grace to any wicked traitors. Selah |
They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. | 6They return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. |
Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear? | 7Look, they spew from their mouths-- sharp words from their lips." For who," they say, "will hear?" |
But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision. | 8But You laugh at them, LORD; You ridicule all the nations. |
Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence. | 9I will keep watch for You, my strength, because God is my stronghold. |
The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies. | 10My faithful God will come to meet me; God will let me look down on my adversaries. |
Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield. | 11Do not kill them; otherwise, my people will forget. By Your power, make them homeless wanderers and bring them down, Lord, our shield. |
For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak. | 12For the sin of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. They utter curses and lies. |
Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah. | 13Consume them in rage; consume them until they are gone. Then people will know throughout the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah |
And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. | 14And they return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. |
Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied. | 15They scavenge for food; they growl if they are not satisfied. |
But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. | 16But I will sing of Your strength and will joyfully proclaim Your faithful love in the morning. For You have been a stronghold for me, a refuge in my day of trouble. |
Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy. | 17To You, my strength, I sing praises, because God is my stronghold-- my faithful God. |
