2From the fruit of his words a man receives benefit, but the treacherous crave violence. | 2Wise words will win you a good meal, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence. |
3Anyone who guards his words protects his life; anyone who talks too much is ruined. | 3Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything. |
4The lazy person craves, yet receives nothing, but the desires of the diligent are satisfied. | 4Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper. |
5A righteous person hates deceit, but the wicked person is shameful and disgraceful. | 5The godly hate lies; the wicked cause shame and disgrace. |
6Righteousness protects the blameless, but wickedness brings down the sinner. | 6Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin. |
7One person pretends to be wealthy, but has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet is rich. | 7Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor. |
8The life of a wealthy man may be held for ransom, but whoever is poor receives no threats. | 8The rich can pay a ransom for their lives, but the poor won’t even get threatened. |
9The light of the righteous shines, but the lamp of the wicked is extinguished. | 9The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. |
10Arrogance only brings quarreling, but those receiving advice are wise. | 10Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise. |
11Wealth gained dishonestly dwindles away, but whoever works diligently increases his prosperity. | 11Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time. |
12Delayed hope makes the heart ill, but fulfilled longing is a tree of life. | 12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life. |
13Anyone who despises a word of advice will pay for it, but whoever heeds a command will be rewarded. | 13People who despise advice are asking for trouble; those who respect a command will succeed. |
14What the wise have to teach is a fountain of life and causes someone to avoid the snares of death. | 14The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death. |
15Good understanding produces grace, but the lifestyle of the treacherous never changes. | 15A person with good sense is respected; a treacherous person is headed for destruction. |
16Every sensible person acts from knowledge, but a fool demonstrates folly. | 16Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness. |
17An evil messenger stumbles into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. | 17An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing. |
18Poverty and shame are for those who ignore correction, but whoever listens to instruction gains honor. | 18If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored. |
19Fulfilled longing is sweet to the soul, but avoiding evil is detestable to the fool. | 19It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them. |
20Whoever keeps company with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm. | 20Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. |
21Disaster pursues the sinful, but good will reward the righteous. | 21Trouble chases sinners, while blessings reward the righteous. |
22A good person leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, but the wealth of the wicked is reserved for the righteous. | 22Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly. |
23The field of the poor may produce much food, but it can be swept away through injustice. | 23A poor person’s farm may produce much food, but injustice sweeps it all away. |
24Whoever does not discipline his son hates him, but whoever loves him is diligent to correct him. | 24Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them. |
25A righteous person eats to his heart's content, but the stomach of the wicked remains hungry. | 25The godly eat to their hearts’ content, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry. |
