The LORD continued with his message to me. 1Again a message came to me from the LORD:
"Son of Man," he said, "turn your face to oppose the mountains of Israel and prophesy against them. 2“Son of man, turn and face the mountains of Israel and prophesy against them.
Tell the mountains of Israel to listen as the Lord GOD speaks. This is what the Lord GOD has to say to the mountains, hills, streams, and the valleys: 'Look! I'm about to bring my sword against you. I'm going to destroy your high places. 3Proclaim this message from the Sovereign LORD against the mountains of Israel. This is what the Sovereign LORD says to the mountains and hills and to the ravines and valleys: I am about to bring war upon you, and I will smash your pagan shrines.
Your altars will become desolate and your sun pillars will be shattered. I'll throw your slain down right in front of your idols. 4All your altars will be demolished, and your places of worship will be destroyed. I will kill your people in front of your idols.
I'll place the corpses of the Israelis in front of their idols. I'll scatter your bones around your altar. 5I will lay your corpses in front of your idols and scatter your bones around your altars.
In all the places where you live, the cities will be desolate. The high places will also be desolate so that your altars will be laid waste, bearing the punishment appropriate to them. Your idols will be shattered, your sun pillars will be hewn down, and your works will be obliterated. 6Wherever you live there will be desolation, and I will destroy your pagan shrines. Your altars will be demolished, your idols will be smashed, your places of worship will be torn down, and all the religious objects you have made will be destroyed.
The fatally wounded among you will fall, and at that time you'll know that I am the LORD. 7The place will be littered with corpses, and you will know that I alone am the LORD.
I'll leave a remnant among you—those who will escape the sword when I'll have scattered you throughout the earth. 8“But I will let a few of my people escape destruction, and they will be scattered among the nations of the world.
Your survivors will remember me among the nations where they'll be taken captives. I've been crushed by their unfaithful hearts that have turned against me. 9Then when they are exiled among the nations, they will remember me. They will recognize how hurt I am by their unfaithful hearts and lustful eyes that long for their idols. Then at last they will hate themselves for all their detestable sins.
Then they'll know that I am the LORD. I didn't declare this evil that's intended for them without a reason.'"10They will know that I alone am the LORD and that I was serious when I said I would bring this calamity on them.
This is what the Lord GOD says: "Clap your hands and stamp your feet! Say, 'Oh, no!' Because of all the detestable evil that has come from Israel's house, they'll fall by the sword, famine, and pestilence. 11“This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Clap your hands in horror, and stamp your feet. Cry out because of all the detestable sins the people of Israel have committed. Now they are going to die from war and famine and disease.
The one who lives far away will die by pestilence and the one who is near will die violently. The survivors and their surveillance details will die by famine as I exhaust my rage against them.12Disease will strike down those who are far away in exile. War will destroy those who are nearby. And anyone who survives will be killed by famine. So at last I will spend my fury on them.
"You'll learn that I am the LORD, when the fatally wounded will be among their idols, around their altars, on every hill, on top of the mountains, under every luxuriant tree, and under all the full-grown foliage—every place where they've offered fragrant aromas to all their idols. 13They will know that I am the LORD when their dead lie scattered among their idols and altars on every hill and mountain and under every green tree and every great shade tree—the places where they offered sacrifices to their idols.
I'll stretch out my hands to strike them and send devastation to the land, from the wilderness of Diblah, throughout all their dwelling places. Then they'll know that I am the LORD."14I will crush them and make their cities desolate from the wilderness in the south to Riblah in the north. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”
