Proverbs 13
HCSB Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Holman Christian Standard BibleNew Living Translation
A wise son responds to his father's discipline, but a mocker doesn't listen to rebuke. 1A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline; a mocker refuses to listen to correction.
From the words of his mouth, a man will enjoy good things, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence. 2Wise words will win you a good meal, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence.
The one who guards his mouth protects his life; the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin. 3Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.
The slacker craves, yet has nothing, but the diligent is fully satisfied. 4Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.
The righteous hate lying, but the wicked act disgustingly and disgracefully. 5The godly hate lies; the wicked cause shame and disgrace.
Righteousness guards people of integrity, but wickedness undermines the sinner. 6Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin.
One man pretends to be rich but has nothing; another pretends to be poor but has great wealth. 7Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor.
Riches are a ransom for a man's life, but a poor man hears no threat. 8The rich can pay a ransom for their lives, but the poor won’t even get threatened.
The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is put out. 9The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.
Arrogance leads to nothing but strife, but wisdom is gained by those who take advice. 10Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.
Wealth obtained by fraud will dwindle, but whoever earns it through labor will multiply it. 11Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.
Delayed hope makes the heart sick, but fulfilled desire is a tree of life. 12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.
The one who has contempt for instruction will pay the penalty, but the one who respects a command will be rewarded. 13People who despise advice are asking for trouble; those who respect a command will succeed.
A wise man's instruction is a fountain of life, turning people away from the snares of death. 14The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death.
Good sense wins favor, but the way of the treacherous never changes. 15A person with good sense is respected; a treacherous person is headed for destruction.
Every sensible person acts knowledgeably, but a fool displays his stupidity. 16Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.
A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy courier brings healing. 17An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing.
Poverty and disgrace come to those who ignore discipline, but the one who accepts correction will be honored. 18If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored.
Desire fulfilled is sweet to the taste, but to turn from evil is an abomination to fools. 19It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them.
The one who walks with the wise will become wise, but a companion of fools will suffer harm. 20Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.
Disaster pursues sinners, but good rewards the righteous. 21Trouble chases sinners, while blessings reward the righteous.
A good man leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, but the sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous. 22Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.
The uncultivated field of the poor yields abundant food, but without justice, it is swept away. 23A poor person’s farm may produce much food, but injustice sweeps it all away.
The one who will not use the rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently. 24Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.
A righteous man eats until he is satisfied, but the stomach of the wicked is empty. 25The godly eat to their hearts’ content, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.
