1Now these were the people of the province who came up out of the captivity of those exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried captive to Babylonia. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town. | 1Here is the list of the Jewish exiles of the provinces who returned from their captivity. King Nebuchadnezzar had deported them to Babylon, but now they returned to Jerusalem and the other towns in Judah where they originally lived. |
2They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah. However, they could not prove that they or their families were descendants of Israel. |
60the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, and the sons of Nekoda, 652. | 60This group included the families of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda—a total of 652 people. |
61Also, of the sons of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, and the sons of Barzillai (who had taken a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their name). | 61Three families of priests—Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai—also returned. (This Barzillai had married a woman who was a descendant of Barzillai of Gilead, and he had taken her family name.) |
62These sought their registration among those enrolled in the genealogies, but they were not found there, and so they were excluded from the priesthood as unclean. | 62They searched for their names in the genealogical records, but they were not found, so they were disqualified from serving as priests. |
63The governor told them that they were not to partake of the most holy food, until there should be a priest to consult Urim and Thummim. | 63The governor told them not to eat the priests’ share of food from the sacrifices until a priest could consult the LORD about the matter by using the Urim and Thummim—the sacred lots. |
64The whole assembly together was 42,360, | 64So a total of 42,360 people returned to Judah, |
65besides their male and female servants, of whom there were 7,337, and they had 200 male and female singers. | 65in addition to 7,337 servants and 200 singers, both men and women. |
66Their horses were 736, their mules were 245, | 66They took with them 736 horses, 245 mules, |
67their camels were 435, and their donkeys were 6,720. | 67435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys. |
68Some of the heads of families, when they came to the house of the LORD that is in Jerusalem, made freewill offerings for the house of God, to erect it on its site. | 68When they arrived at the Temple of the LORD in Jerusalem, some of the family leaders made voluntary offerings toward the rebuilding of God’s Temple on its original site, |
69According to their ability they gave to the treasury of the work 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000 minas of silver, and 100 priests’ garments. | 69and each leader gave as much as he could. The total of their gifts came to 61,000 gold coins, 6,250 pounds of silver, and 100 robes for the priests. |
70Now the priests, the Levites, some of the people, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants lived in their towns, and all the rest of Israel in their towns. | 70So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, the Temple servants, and some of the common people settled in villages near Jerusalem. The rest of the people returned to their own towns throughout Israel. |
