In my first book, O Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach,1In my first book, Theophilus, I wrote about everything Jesus did and taught from the beginning,
until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.2up to the day when he was taken up to heaven after giving orders by the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.
After His suffering, He presented Himself to them with many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a span of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.3After he had suffered, he had shown himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during a period of 40 days and telling them about the kingdom of God.
And while they were gathered together, He commanded them: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss.4While he was meeting with them, he ordered them, "Don't leave Jerusalem. Instead, wait for what the Father has promised, about which you heard me speak,
For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”5because John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit a few days from now."
So when they came together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”6Now those who had gathered together began to ask Jesus, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?"
Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.7He answered them, "It isn't for you to know what times or periods the Father has fixed by his own authority.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”8But you'll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.9After saying this, Jesus was taken up while those who had gathered together were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.10While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, two men in white robes stood right beside them.
“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”11They asked, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you saw him go up into heaven."
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near the city, a Sabbath day’s journey away.12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away.
When they arrived, they went to the upper room where they were staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.13When they came into the city, these men went to the upstairs room where they had been staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
With one accord they all continued in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.14With one mind, all of them kept devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women (including Mary the mother of Jesus) and his brothers.
In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (a gathering of about a hundred and twenty) and said,15At that time, Peter got up among the brothers (there were about 120 people present) and said,
“Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit foretold through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus.16"Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the voice of David about Judas, who was the guide for those who arrested Jesus,
He was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”17because he was one of our number and was appointed to share in this ministry."
(Now with the reward for his wickedness Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong and burst open in the middle, and all his intestines spilled out.18(Now this man bought a field with the money he got for his crime. Falling on his face, he burst open in the middle, and all his intestines gushed out.
This became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so they called that field in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)19This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that this field is called in their language Hakeldama, that is, "The Field of Blood".)
“For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and, ‘May another take his position.’20"For in the Book of Psalms it is written, 'Let his estate be desolate, and let no one live on it,' and, 'Let someone else take over his office,'
Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,21who was one of the men associated with us all the time the Lord Jesus came and went among us,
beginning from John’s baptism until the day Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”22beginning when he was baptized by John until the day he was taken up from us. Therefore, someone like this must become a witness with us to his resurrection."
So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.23So they nominated two men—Joseph called Barsabbas, who also was called Justus, and Matthias.
And they prayed, “Lord, You know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two You have chosen24Then they prayed, "Lord, you know the hearts of all people. Show us which one of these two men you have chosen
to take up this ministry and apostleship, which Judas abandoned to go to his rightful place.”25to serve in this office of apostle, from which Judas left to go to his own place."
Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.26So they drew lots for them, and when the lot fell on Matthias, he was enrolled with the eleven apostles.
