Again and again the LORD had sent his prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah: "Turn from all your evil ways. Obey my commands and decrees--the entire law that I commanded your ancestors to obey, and that I gave you through my servants the prophets."
"O Israel," says the LORD, "if you wanted to return to me, you could. You could throw away your detestable idols and stray away no more.
But I will be merciful only if you stop your evil thoughts and deeds and start treating each other with justice;
but then that nation renounces its evil ways, I will not destroy it as I had planned.
"Therefore, Jeremiah, go and warn all Judah and Jerusalem. Say to them, 'This is what the LORD says: I am planning disaster for you instead of good. So turn from your evil ways, each of you, and do what is right.'"
But if you stop your sinning and begin to obey the LORD your God, he will change his mind about this disaster that he has announced against you.
