A damsel came unto him - A maid servant, παιδισκη. See this translation vindicated by Kypke.
Thou also wast with Jesus - What a noble opportunity had Peter now to show his zeal for the insulted cause of truth, and his attachment to his Master. But, alas! he is shorn of his strength. Constables and maid servants are no company for an apostle, except when he is delivering to them the message of salvation. Evil communications corrupt good manners. Had Peter been in better company, he would not have had so foul a fall.

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,
But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said.
While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.
And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.
but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, "You aren't one of his disciples too, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not."
