Parallel Chapters The Locusts, Fire, and Plumbline
(Joel 2:1-11) 1This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: He was preparing swarms of locusts after the king's share had been harvested and just as the late crops were coming up. | 1This is what the Lord GOD showed me: behold, he was forming locusts when the latter growth was just beginning to sprout, and behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings. | 1Thus the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, He was forming a locust-swarm when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king's mowing. | 1Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings. | 1The Lord GOD showed me this: He was forming a swarm of locusts at the time the spring crop first began to sprout--after the cutting of the king's hay. |
When they had stripped the land clean, I cried out, "Sovereign LORD, forgive! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!" | 2When they had finished eating the grass of the land, I said, “O Lord GOD, please forgive! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!” | 2And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said, "Lord GOD, please pardon! How can Jacob stand, For he is small?" | 2And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. | 2When the locusts finished eating the vegetation of the land, I said, "Lord GOD, please forgive! How will Jacob survive since he is so small?" |
So the LORD relented. "This will not happen," the LORD said. | 3The LORD relented concerning this: “It shall not be,” said the LORD. | 3The LORD changed His mind about this. "It shall not be," said the LORD. | 3The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD. | 3The LORD relented concerning this. "It will not happen," He said. |
This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: The Sovereign LORD was calling for judgment by fire; it dried up the great deep and devoured the land. | 4This is what the Lord GOD showed me: behold, the Lord GOD was calling for a judgment by fire, and it devoured the great deep and was eating up the land. | 4Thus the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, the Lord GOD was calling to contend with them by fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the farm land. | 4Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part. | 4The Lord GOD showed me this: The Lord GOD was calling for a judgment by fire. It consumed the great deep and devoured the land. |
Then I cried out, "Sovereign LORD, I beg you, stop! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!" | 5Then I said, “O Lord GOD, please cease! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!” | 5Then I said, "Lord GOD, please stop! How can Jacob stand, for he is small?" | 5Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. | 5Then I said, "Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob survive since he is so small?" |
So the LORD relented. "This will not happen either," the Sovereign LORD said. | 6The LORD relented concerning this: “This also shall not be,” said the Lord GOD. | 6The LORD changed His mind about this. "This too shall not be," said the Lord GOD. | 6The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD. | 6The LORD relented concerning this. "This will not happen either," said the Lord GOD. |
This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. | 7This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. | 7Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand. | 7Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. | 7He showed me this: The Lord was standing there by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand. |
And the LORD asked me, "What do you see, Amos?" "A plumb line," I replied. Then the Lord said, "Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer. | 8And the LORD said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them; | 8The LORD said to me, "What do you see, Amos?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "Behold I am about to put a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel. I will spare them no longer. | 8And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: | 8The LORD asked me, "What do you see, Amos?" I replied, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "I am setting a plumb line among My people Israel; I will no longer spare them: |
"The high places of Isaac will be destroyed and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined; with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam." | 9the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.” | 9"The high places of Isaac will be desolated And the sanctuaries of Israel laid waste. Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword." | 9And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. | 9Isaac's high places will be deserted, and Israel's sanctuaries will be in ruins; I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with a sword." |
Amaziah Accuses Amos 10Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel: "Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words. | 10Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. | 10Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. | 10Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. | 10Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words, |
For this is what Amos is saying: "'Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land.'" | 11For thus Amos has said, “‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land.’” | 11"For thus Amos says, 'Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.'" | 11For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. | 11for Amos has said this: 'Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go into exile from its homeland.'" |
Then Amaziah said to Amos, "Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. | 12And Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there, | 12Then Amaziah said to Amos, "Go, you seer, flee away to the land of Judah and there eat bread and there do your prophesying! | 12Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: | 12Then Amaziah said to Amos, "Go away, you seer! Flee to the land of Judah. Earn your living and give your prophecies there, |
Don't prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king's sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom." | 13but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.” | 13"But no longer prophesy at Bethel, for it is a sanctuary of the king and a royal residence." | 13But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court. | 13but don't ever prophesy at Bethel again, for it is the king's sanctuary and a royal temple." |
Amos answered Amaziah, "I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. | 14Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, “I was no prophet, nor a prophet’s son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. | 14Then Amos replied to Amaziah, "I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. | 14Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: | 14So Amos answered Amaziah, "I was not a prophet or the son of a prophet; rather, I was a herdsman, and I took care of sycamore figs. |
But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.' | 15But the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ | 15"But the LORD took me from following the flock and the LORD said to me, 'Go prophesy to My people Israel.' | 15And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel. | 15But the LORD took me from following the flock and said to me, 'Go, prophesy to My people Israel.'" |
Now then, hear the word of the LORD. You say, "'Do not prophesy against Israel, and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.' | 16Now therefore hear the word of the LORD. “You say, ‘Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not preach against the house of Isaac.’ | 16"Now hear the word of the LORD: you are saying, 'You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you speak against the house of Isaac.' | 16Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac. | 16Now hear the word of the LORD. You say: Do not prophesy against Israel; do not preach against the house of Isaac. |
"Therefore this is what the LORD says: "'Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. Your land will be measured and divided up, and you yourself will die in a pagan country. And Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land.'" | 17Therefore thus says the LORD: “‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided up with a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.’” | 17"Therefore, thus says the LORD, 'Your wife will become a harlot in the city, your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line and you yourself will die upon unclean soil. Moreover, Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.'" | 17Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land. | 17Therefore, this is what the LORD says: Your wife will be a prostitute in the city, your sons and daughters will fall by the sword, and your land will be divided up with a measuring line. You yourself will die on pagan soil, and Israel will certainly go into exile from its homeland. |
