เพราะวันนั้นเป็นวันเตรียม พวกยิวจึงขอให้ปีลาตทุบขาของผู้ที่ถูกตรึงให้หัก และให้เอาศพไปเสีย เพื่อไม่ให้ศพค้างอยู่ที่กางเขนในวันสะบาโต (เพราะวันสะบาโตนั้นเป็นวันใหญ่)
