Matthew 1
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
1The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.

2Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and and Jacob begat Judah and his brothers; 3and Judah begat Perez and Zerah from out of Tamar; and Perez begat Hezron; and Hezron begat Ram; 4and Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon; and Nahshon begat Salmon; 5and Salmon begat Boaz from out of Rahab; and Boaz begat Obed from out of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; 6and Jesse begat David the king. And David begat Solomon from out of her [who had been the wife] of Uriah; 7and Solomon begat Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begat Abijah; and Abijah begat Asa; 8and Asa begat Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Uzziah; 9and Uzziah begat Jotham; and Jotham begat Ahaz; and Ahaz begat Hezekiah; 10and Hezekiah begat Manasseh; and Manasseh begat Amos; and Amos begat Josiah; 11and Josiah begat Jechoniah and his brothers at (upon) the deportation (change of abode- after house) to Babylon.

12And after the deportation to Babylon, Jechoniah begat Shealtiel; and Shealtiel begat Zerubbabel; 13And Zerubbabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; 14And Azor begat Zadok; and Zadok begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; 15And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; 16And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary from out of whom Jesus was begat (born), the One called Christ.

17Therefore all the generations from Abraham until David were fourteen generations; and from David until the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon until the Christ, fourteen generations.

18And the birth (greek-genesis, origin) of Jesus Christ was in this manner. His mother Mary having been betrothed (promised to marriage, latin-desponsata-betrothed root is espoused) to Joseph, before their coming together, she was found holding (having, possessing) [a child] in her womb from out of the Holy Spirit. 19And Joseph, her husband, being righteous (just), and not wanting her to expose her publicly, resolved to release her (put away, send away, let go, unbind, discharge, word is used of divorce in other contexts, to loose/release/dissolve away from, latin-dimittere-release) secretly. 20And while he was in a passionate state of surmising of these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him according to a sleep-dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, Fear not to receive (take) Mary as your wife; for that having been beget (conceived) in her is from out of the Holy Spirit. 21And she will bear a Son, and you will call His name, Jesus; for He will save His people away from their sins. 22And the whole of this happened so that that might be fulfilled having been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, 23Behold, the virgin (latin-virgo-virgin, greek-parthenos) will hold in her womb, and will bear a Son, and they will call His name, Immanuel, which is translated, God with us. 24And Joseph having been awoken from his sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and received (took) his wife, 25And did not know her until that she had brought forth a son; and he called His name Jesus.
