The Seventh Day 1And the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their host. 2And God finished by the seventh day His work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done.† 3And God blessed the seventh day, and He sanctified it, because on it He ceased from all His work that God had created for making. Man and Woman in the Garden 4These are the generations of the heavens and the earth in their being created, in the day when YHWH† God made the earth and the heavens. 5And any bush of the field had not yet come to be on the earth, and any plant of the field had not yet sprouted, for YHWH God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and man was not there to work the ground. 6And a mist† went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. 7And YHWH God formed the man from dust of the ground, and He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living soul.† 8And YHWH God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and He put there the man whom He had formed. 9And YHWH God made sprout from the ground every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food, and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10And a river went forth from Eden to water the garden, and from there it was divided and became four heads: 11The name of the one is Pishon; it is the one winding through the whole land of the Havilah, where there is the gold. 12And the gold of that land is good, and the bdellium and the onyx stone are there. 13And the name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one winding through the whole land of Cush. 14And the name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one going along the east side of Assyria. And the fourth river, it is the Euphrates. 15And YHWH God took the man and He caused him to rest in the garden of Eden, to work it and to keep it. 16And YHWH God placed a command upon the man, saying, “From every tree of the garden you may surely eat. 17And from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, from it you shall not eat. For in the day of your eating from it, you shall surely die!” 18And YHWH God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make for him a helper suitable.” 19And YHWH God formed from the ground every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens, and He brought them to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man† called it—each living soul—that was its name. 20And the man called names to all the livestock, and to the bird of the heavens, and to every beast of the field. And for the man there was not found a helper suitable. 21And YHWH God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept, and He took one of his ribs† and He closed up the flesh in its place. 22And YHWH God built up the rib—which He had taken from the man—into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23And the man said, “This at last is bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh; for this shall be called ‘Woman,’ because out of Man this was taken.” 24Upon thus a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.† 25And the two of them were naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.
