The Table of Nations
(1 Chronicles 1:4–27)

1  וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (And these are) תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת (the generations) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) נֹ֔חַ (of Noah), שֵׁ֖ם (Shem), חָ֣ם (Ham), וָיָ֑פֶת (and Japheth). וַיִּוָּלְד֥וּ (And were born) לָהֶ֛ם (to them) בָּנִ֖ים (sons) אַחַ֥ר (after) הַמַּבּֽוּל׃ (the flood).

The Japhethites

2  בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) יֶ֔פֶת (of Japheth):

גֹּ֣מֶר (Gomer), וּמָג֔וֹג (and Magog), וּמָדַ֖י (and Madai), וְיָוָ֣ן (and Javan), וְתֻבָ֑ל (and Tubal), וּמֶ֖שֶׁךְ (and Meshech), וְתִירָֽס׃ (and Tiras).

3  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) גֹּ֑מֶר (of Gomer):

אַשְׁכֲּנַ֥ז (Ashkenaz), וְרִיפַ֖ת (and Riphath), וְתֹגַרְמָֽה׃ (and Togarmah).

4  וּבְנֵ֥י (And the sons) יָוָ֖ן (of Javan):

אֱלִישָׁ֣ה (Elishah), וְתַרְשִׁ֑ישׁ (and Tarshish), כִּתִּ֖ים (the Kittim), וְדֹדָנִֽים׃ (and the Dodanim). 5  מֵ֠אֵלֶּה (From these) נִפְרְד֞וּ (were separated) אִיֵּ֤י (the coastlands) הַגּוֹיִם֙ (of the nations) בְּאַרְצֹתָ֔ם (in their lands); אִ֖ישׁ (each) לִלְשֹׁנ֑וֹ (according to his language), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (according to their clans), בְּגוֹיֵהֶֽם׃ (in their nations).

The Hamites

6  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) חָ֑ם (of Ham):

כּ֥וּשׁ (Cush), וּמִצְרַ֖יִם (and Mizraim), וּפ֥וּט (and Put), וּכְנָֽעַן׃ (and Canaan).

7  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) כ֔וּשׁ (of Cush):

סְבָא֙ (Seba), וַֽחֲוִילָ֔ה (and Havilah), וְסַבְתָּ֥ה (and Sabtah), וְרַעְמָ֖ה (and Raamah), וְסַבְתְּכָ֑א (and Sabtecha);

וּבְנֵ֥י (and the sons) רַעְמָ֖ה (of Raamah):

שְׁבָ֥א (Sheba), וּדְדָֽן׃ (and Dedan).

8  וְכ֖וּשׁ (And Cush) יָלַ֣ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) נִמְרֹ֑ד (Nimrod); ה֣וּא (he) הֵחֵ֔ל (began) לִֽהְי֥וֹת (to be) גִּבֹּ֖ר (a mighty one) בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ (on the earth). 9  הֽוּא־ (He) הָיָ֥ה (was) גִבֹּֽר־ (mighty) צַ֖יִד (a hunter) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH); עַל־ (upon) כֵּן֙ (thus) יֵֽאָמַ֔ר (it is said): כְּנִמְרֹ֛ד (Like Nimrod), גִּבּ֥וֹר (a mighty) צַ֖יִד (hunter) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 10  וַתְּהִ֨י (And was) רֵאשִׁ֤ית (the beginning) מַמְלַכְתּוֹ֙ (of his kingdom) בָּבֶ֔ל (Babylon), וְאֶ֖רֶךְ (and Erech), וְאַכַּ֣ד (and Accad), וְכַלְנֵ֑ה (and Calneh), בְּאֶ֖רֶץ (in the land) שִׁנְעָֽר׃ (of Shinar). 11  מִן־ (From) הָאָ֥רֶץ (the land) הַהִ֖וא (that) יָצָ֣א (he went to) אַשּׁ֑וּר (Assyria), וַיִּ֙בֶן֙ (and built) אֶת־ (-) נִ֣ינְוֵ֔ה (Nineveh) וְאֶת־ (and) רְחֹבֹ֥ת (Rehoboth-), עִ֖יר (ir), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּֽלַח׃ (Calah), 12  וְֽאֶת־ (and) רֶ֔סֶן (Resen) בֵּ֥ין (between) נִֽינְוֵ֖ה (Nineveh) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) כָּ֑לַח (Calah); הִ֖וא (it is) הָעִ֥יר (the city) הַגְּדֹלָֽה׃ (the great).

13  וּמִצְרַ֡יִם (And Mizraim) יָלַ֞ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) לוּדִ֧ים (Ludim), וְאֶת־ (and) עֲנָמִ֛ים (Anamim), וְאֶת־ (and) לְהָבִ֖ים (Lehabim), וְאֶת־ (and) נַפְתֻּחִֽים׃ (Naphtuhim), 14  וְֽאֶת־ (and) פַּתְרֻסִ֞ים (Pathrusim), וְאֶת־ (and) כַּסְלֻחִ֗ים (the Casluhites) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) יָצְא֥וּ (came) מִשָּׁ֛ם (from them) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (the Philistines)) וְאֶת־ (and) כַּפְתֹּרִֽים׃ס (the Caphtorim).

15  וּכְנַ֗עַן (And Canaan) יָלַ֛ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) צִידֹ֥ן (Sidon) בְּכֹר֖וֹ (his firstborn), וְאֶת־ (and) חֵֽת׃ (Heth), 16  וְאֶת־ (and) הַיְבוּסִי֙ (the Jebusite), וְאֶת־ (and) הָ֣אֱמֹרִ֔י (the Amorite), וְאֵ֖ת (and) הַגִּרְגָּשִֽׁי׃ (the Girgashite), 17  וְאֶת־ (and) הַֽחִוִּ֥י (the Hivite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַֽעַרְקִ֖י (the Arkite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַסִּינִֽי׃ (the Sinite), 18  וְאֶת־ (and) הָֽאַרְוָדִ֥י (the Arvadite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַצְּמָרִ֖י (the Zemarite), וְאֶת־ (and) הַֽחֲמָתִ֑י (the Hamathite);

וְאַחַ֣ר (and afterward) נָפֹ֔צוּ (were scattered) מִשְׁפְּח֖וֹת (the clans) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִֽי׃ (of the Canaanite). 19  וַֽיְהִ֞י (And was) גְּב֤וּל (the border) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (of the Canaanite) מִצִּידֹ֔ן (from Sidon) בֹּאֲכָ֥ה (as you go) גְרָ֖רָה (toward Gerar), עַד־ (as far as) עַזָּ֑ה (Gaza); בֹּאֲכָ֞ה (and as you go) סְדֹ֧מָה (toward Sodom), וַעֲמֹרָ֛ה (and Gomorrah), וְאַדְמָ֥ה (and Admah), וּצְבֹיִ֖ם (and Zeboiim), עַד־ (as far as) לָֽשַׁע׃ (Lasha).

20  אֵ֣לֶּה (These are) בְנֵי־ (the sons) חָ֔ם (of Ham), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (according to their clans), לִלְשֹֽׁנֹתָ֑ם (according to their languages), בְּאַרְצֹתָ֖ם (in their lands), בְּגוֹיֵהֶֽם׃ס (in their nations).

The Semites

21  וּלְשֵׁ֥ם (And to Shem) יֻלַּ֖ד (sons were born), גַּם־ (even) ה֑וּא (to him) אֲבִי֙ (the father) כָּל־ (of all) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) עֵ֔בֶר (of Eber), אֲחִ֖י (the brother) יֶ֥פֶת (of Japheth) הַגָּדֽוֹל׃ (the elder).

22  בְּנֵ֥י (The sons) שֵׁ֖ם (of Shem):

עֵילָ֣ם (Elam), וְאַשּׁ֑וּר (and Asshur), וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁ֖ד (and Arphaxad), וְל֥וּד (and Lud), וַֽאֲרָֽם׃ (and Aram).

23  וּבְנֵ֖י (And the sons) אֲרָ֑ם (of Aram):

ע֥וּץ (Uz), וְח֖וּל (and Hul), וְגֶ֥תֶר (and Gether), וָמַֽשׁ׃ (and Mash).

24  וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁ֖ד (And Arphaxad) יָלַ֣ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) שָׁ֑לַח (Shelah), וְשֶׁ֖לַח (and Shelah) יָלַ֥ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) עֵֽבֶר׃ (Eber).

25  וּלְעֵ֥בֶר (And to Eber) יֻלַּ֖ד (were born) שְׁנֵ֣י (two) בָנִ֑ים (sons): שֵׁ֣ם (The name) הָֽאֶחָ֞ד (of the one was) פֶּ֗לֶג (Peleg), כִּ֤י (for) בְיָמָיו֙ (in his days) נִפְלְגָ֣ה (was divided) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth); וְשֵׁ֥ם (and the name) אָחִ֖יו (of his brother) יָקְטָֽן׃ (was Joktan).

26  וְיָקְטָ֣ן (And Joktan) יָלַ֔ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) אַלְמוֹדָ֖ד (Almodad), וְאֶת־ (and) שָׁ֑לֶף (Sheleph), וְאֶת־ (and) חֲצַרְמָ֖וֶת (Hazarmaveth), וְאֶת־ (and) יָֽרַח׃ (Jerah), 27  וְאֶת־ (and) הֲדוֹרָ֥ם (Hadoram), וְאֶת־ (and) אוּזָ֖ל (Uzal), וְאֶת־ (and) דִּקְלָֽה׃ (Diklah), 28  וְאֶת־ (and) עוֹבָ֥ל (Obal), וְאֶת־ (and) אֲבִֽימָאֵ֖ל (Abimael), וְאֶת־ (and) שְׁבָֽא׃ (Sheba), 29  וְאֶת־ (and) אוֹפִ֥ר (Ophir), וְאֶת־ (and) חֲוִילָ֖ה (Havilah), וְאֶת־ (and) יוֹבָ֑ב (Jobab); כָּל־ (all) אֵ֖לֶּה (these are) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יָקְטָֽן׃ (of Joktan). 30  וַֽיְהִ֥י (And was) מוֹשָׁבָ֖ם (their dwelling) מִמֵּשָׁ֑א (from Mesha) בֹּאֲכָ֥ה (as you go) סְפָ֖רָה (toward Sephar), הַ֥ר (the mountain) הַקֶּֽדֶם׃ (of the east).

31  אֵ֣לֶּה (These are) בְנֵי־ (the sons) שֵׁ֔ם (of Shem), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם (according to their clans), לִלְשֹׁנֹתָ֑ם (according to their languages), בְּאַרְצֹתָ֖ם (in their lands), לְגוֹיֵהֶֽם׃ (in their nations).

32  אֵ֣לֶּה (These are) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֧ת (the clans) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) נֹ֛חַ (of Noah), לְתוֹלְדֹתָ֖ם (according to their generations), בְּגוֹיֵהֶ֑ם (in their nations); וּמֵאֵ֜לֶּה (and from these) נִפְרְד֧וּ (were divided) הַגּוֹיִ֛ם (the nations) בָּאָ֖רֶץ (on the earth) אַחַ֥ר (after) הַמַּבּֽוּל׃פ (the flood).
