Ephraim’s Inheritance 1The allotment for the descendants of Joseph (YHWH has added) extended from the Jordan (flowing down) at Jericho (city of palms) to the waters of Jericho on the east, through the wilderness that goes up from Jericho into the hill country of Bethel (house of God). 2It went on from Bethel (house of God) (that is, Luz [from Bethel to Luz])a and proceeded to the border of the Archites (lengthy) in Ataroth (crowns). 3Then it descended westward to the border of the Japhletites (let him escape) as far as the border of (house of hollowness) Lower Beth-horon and on to Gezer (portion), and it ended at the Sea (the Mediterranean Sea).b 4So Ephraim (doubly fruitful) and Manasseh (causing to forget), the sons of Joseph (YHWH has added), received their inheritance. 5This was the territory of the descendants of Ephraim (doubly fruitful) by their clans: The border of their inheritance went from Ataroth-addar (crowns of glory) in the east to Upper Beth-horon (house of hollowness) 6and out toward the Sea. From Michmethath (hiding place) on the north it turned eastward toward Taanath-shiloh (approach to Shiloh) and passed by it to Janoah (He rests) on the east. 7From Janoah (He rests) it went down to Ataroth (crowns) and Naarah (maiden), and then reached Jericho (city of palms) and came out at the Jordan (flowing down). 8From Tappuah (the apple city) the border went westward to the Brook of Kanah (reed) and ended at the Sea. This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Ephraim (doubly fruitful), 9along with all the cities and villages set apart for the descendants of Ephraim (doubly fruitful) within the inheritance of Manasseh (causing to forget). 10But they did not drive out the Canaanites (merchants) who lived in Gezer (portion). So the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites (doubly fruitful) to this day, but they are forced laborers.
