EXPOSITORY (ENGLISH BIBLE)
(35) They which shall be accounted worthy.—Another word common to St. Luke and St. Paul (2Thessalonians 1:5), and to them only in the New Testament.

20:27-38 It is common for those who design to undermine any truth of God, to load it with difficulties. But we wrong ourselves, and wrong the truth of Christ, when we form our notions of the world of spirits by this world of sense. There are more worlds than one; a present visible world, and a future unseen world; and let every one compare this world and that world, and give the preference in his thoughts and cares to that which deserves them. Believers shall obtain the resurrection from the dead, that is the blessed resurrection. What shall be the happy state of the inhabitants of that world, we cannot express or conceive,See this explained in the Matthew 22:15-33 notes, and Mark 12:13-27 notes. 34. said unto them—In Mt 22:29, the reply begins with this important statement:—"Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures," regarding the future state, "nor the power of God," before which a thousand such difficulties vanish (also Mr 12:24). See Poole on "Luke 20:27"

But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world,.... The world to come, eternal life and happiness; not by their own works and merits, but through the blood, sacrifice, and righteousness of the Messiah;

and the resurrection from the dead; that is, the first resurrection, the resurrection unto life, which only the dead in Christ will enjoy; otherwise all will be raised: but some to the resurrection of damnation:

these neither marry, nor are given in marriage; there will be no need of any such practice, for the reasons that follow.

But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
EXEGETICAL (ORIGINAL LANGUAGES)
Luke 20:35. οἱ δὲ καταξιωθέντες, etc., those deemed worthy to attain that world. The thought could have been expressed without τυχεῖν, for which accordingly there is no equivalent in the Vulgate: “qui digni habebuntur seculo illo,” on which account Pricaeus thinks it should be left out of the Greek text. But the use of this verb, even when it seems but an elegant superfluity, is common in Greek. Examples in Bornemann.

Luke 20:35. Καταξιωθέντες, who are accounted worthy) Truly a great dignity conferred. So ch. Luke 21:36 [ἴνα καταξιωθῆτε, “that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things—and to stand before the Son of man”].—τοῦ αἰῶνος ἐκείνου, καὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως, that world, and the resurrection) Therefore even before the resurrection an entrance is given into that world.—ἐκ νεκρῶν, out from the dead) All shall rise again; but the godly shall rise again out from among the ungodly.[217] As to these latter, there is not preached and declared the resurrection, but a more profound death of the soul conjoined with the body. So Acts 4:2.[218]

[217] In reference to which fact, the term ἐξανάστασις is used by Paul (not merely ἀνάστασις), Php 3:11, to express his great hope.—E. and T.

[218] Τὴν ἀνάστασιν τὴν ἐκ νεκρῶν. However the word resurrection, ἀνάστασιν, is applied to the unjust as well as to the just, Acts 24:15, though not with the addition, ἐκ νεκρῶν, out from the dead.—E. and T.
