The Scriptures: The Wicked: Make, of None Effect Through Their Traditions
Jump to: Torrey'sLibrarySubtopicsTerms
Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of the wicked nullifying the effect of the Scriptures through their traditions is a theme that emerges prominently in the teachings of Jesus Christ, particularly in His interactions with the Pharisees and scribes. This theme underscores the tension between human traditions and divine commandments, highlighting the potential for religious practices to overshadow or even contradict the Word of God.

Biblical Context

In the New Testament, Jesus addresses this issue directly in the Gospel of Mark. The Pharisees and some of the scribes questioned Jesus about His disciples not following the traditional ceremonial washing of hands. Jesus responds by quoting the prophet Isaiah, emphasizing the hypocrisy of honoring God with lips while the heart remains distant:

> "He answered them, 'Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: "These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men."' You have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men" (Mark 7:6-8).

Jesus further elaborates on how the Pharisees and scribes have set aside God's commandments in favor of their traditions, thus nullifying the Word of God:

> "You neatly set aside the commandment of God to maintain your own tradition. For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever you would have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift committed to God), he is no longer permitted to do anything for his father or mother. Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters" (Mark 7:9-13).

Theological Implications

The passage highlights a critical theological concern: the danger of elevating human traditions above divine commandments. The Pharisees, in their zeal for religious observance, had developed a complex system of traditions that, while intended to safeguard the Law, often led to legalism and a neglect of the Law's true spirit. Jesus' rebuke serves as a warning against allowing human traditions to obscure or invalidate the Scriptures.

Historical and Cultural Context

The traditions criticized by Jesus were part of the oral law, which the Pharisees believed was given alongside the written Torah. These traditions were meant to provide practical applications of the Law, but over time, they became burdensome and were sometimes used to circumvent the Law's intent. The practice of declaring something "Corban" is an example of how a tradition could be manipulated to avoid fulfilling one's obligations under the Law.

Application for Believers

For contemporary believers, this teaching serves as a reminder to prioritize the authority of Scripture over human traditions. It calls for discernment in distinguishing between practices that genuinely honor God and those that merely uphold human customs. Believers are encouraged to examine their own traditions and ensure they align with biblical teachings, maintaining the integrity and transformative power of the Scriptures in their lives.
