Serpents: Created by God

In the biblical narrative, serpents hold a significant place, appearing in various contexts throughout Scripture. As creatures created by God, serpents are part of the broader tapestry of creation, reflecting both the complexity and the order established by the Creator.

Creation and Nature

The Book of Genesis provides the foundational account of creation, where God brings forth all living creatures. Genesis 1:24-25 states, "And God said, 'Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.' And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good." This passage affirms that serpents, as creatures that move along the ground, were part of God's good creation.

Symbolism and Role in Scripture

Serpents are often associated with cunning and deceit, primarily due to their role in the Fall of Man. In Genesis 3:1 , the serpent is described as "more cunning than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made." This cunning nature is demonstrated when the serpent tempts Eve, leading to the disobedience of Adam and Eve and the subsequent fall of humanity. The serpent's role in this pivotal event has led to its association with Satan and evil throughout Christian theology.

Despite this negative connotation, serpents also appear in other contexts within the Bible. In Numbers 21:8-9 , God instructs Moses to make a bronze serpent and set it on a pole, so that anyone bitten by a snake could look at it and live. This event is later referenced by Jesus in John 3:14-15 , where He says, "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life." Here, the serpent becomes a symbol of salvation and healing, prefiguring Christ's redemptive work on the cross.

Wisdom and Prudence

In the New Testament, serpents are used metaphorically to convey wisdom and prudence. Jesus instructs His disciples in Matthew 10:16 , "Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves." This exhortation highlights the need for discernment and strategic thinking in the face of opposition, using the serpent's reputation for shrewdness as a positive example.

Judgment and Prophecy

The imagery of serpents is also employed in prophetic and apocalyptic literature to depict judgment and the ultimate defeat of evil. In Isaiah 27:1 , the prophet declares, "In that day the LORD will take His sharp, great, and mighty sword, and bring judgment on Leviathan, the fleeing serpent—Leviathan, the coiling serpent—and He will slay the dragon of the sea." This passage symbolizes God's victory over chaos and evil, often represented by serpentine creatures.

Conclusion

Throughout the Bible, serpents serve as complex symbols, embodying both the cunning associated with the Fall and the potential for healing and salvation. As part of God's creation, they reflect the multifaceted nature of the world and the divine narrative woven through Scripture.
