The Reversal of Human Judgment

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of the reversal of human judgment is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, illustrating the divine principle that God's ways and thoughts are higher than those of humanity (Isaiah 55:8-9). This theme underscores the fallibility of human judgment and the ultimate sovereignty and justice of God.

Old Testament Examples

1. Joseph and His Brothers: In the account of Joseph, human judgment is reversed dramatically. Joseph's brothers, driven by jealousy, sell him into slavery, believing they have rid themselves of their father's favored son. However, God's providence turns their evil intentions into a means of salvation for many. Joseph rises to power in Egypt and later reveals to his brothers, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives" (Genesis 50:20).

2. David and Saul: King Saul, in his jealousy and fear, seeks to kill David, whom God has chosen to be the next king of Israel. Despite Saul's attempts, David is protected by God and eventually ascends to the throne. This reversal highlights God's sovereign choice and protection over human schemes (1 Samuel 24:12-15).

3. Esther and Haman: The Book of Esther provides a striking example of reversal. Haman, an official in the Persian Empire, plots to destroy the Jewish people. However, through Esther's courage and God's providence, Haman's plot is thwarted, and he is executed on the very gallows he had prepared for Mordecai, Esther's cousin (Esther 7:9-10).

New Testament Examples

1. The Beatitudes: Jesus' Sermon on the Mount presents a radical reversal of human values. The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12) bless those whom the world often overlooks or scorns: the poor in spirit, the meek, and those who mourn. Jesus teaches that these individuals are blessed in God's kingdom, challenging conventional human judgments about success and happiness.

2. The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus: In this parable, Jesus illustrates the reversal of fortunes in the afterlife. The rich man, who lived in luxury, finds himself in torment, while Lazarus, a poor beggar, is comforted in Abraham's bosom (Luke 16:19-31). This account emphasizes that earthly status does not determine one's eternal destiny.

3. The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus: The ultimate reversal of human judgment is seen in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Condemned and executed as a criminal, Jesus' death is perceived as a defeat. However, through His resurrection, God vindicates Jesus, demonstrating His victory over sin and death (Acts 2:23-24).

Theological Implications

The reversal of human judgment serves as a reminder of God's omniscience and justice. It calls believers to trust in God's ultimate plan and to exercise humility in their judgments. As the Apostle Paul writes, "But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong" (1 Corinthians 1:27). This principle encourages Christians to align their values with God's kingdom, recognizing that His judgments are true and righteous altogether (Psalm 19:9).
