The Request for Elisha's Presence is a significant event recorded in the Old Testament, specifically in the Second Book of Kings. This narrative highlights the role of the prophet Elisha as a man of God whose presence and counsel were sought in times of crisis. The account underscores the recognition of divine authority and the power of God working through His prophets.

Biblical Context

The event is found in 2 Kings 3, during the reign of King Jehoram of Israel. Jehoram, the son of Ahab, was ruling over Israel, and he formed an alliance with Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, and the king of Edom to wage war against Moab. The Moabites, under King Mesha, had rebelled against Israel following the death of Ahab, refusing to pay the tribute of lambs and wool.

The Crisis

As the allied forces of Israel, Judah, and Edom set out to battle against Moab, they found themselves in a dire situation. After a seven-day march through the wilderness, they ran out of water for the troops and their animals. This predicament led to a sense of desperation and fear of defeat, as expressed by Jehoram: "Alas, for the LORD has summoned these three kings to deliver them into the hand of Moab!" (2 Kings 3:10).

The Request for Elisha

In this moment of crisis, Jehoshaphat, known for his faithfulness to God, inquired if there was a prophet of the LORD present to seek divine guidance. An officer of the king of Israel mentioned Elisha, the son of Shaphat, who had served Elijah. Jehoshaphat affirmed, "The word of the LORD is with him" (2 Kings 3:12). Consequently, the three kings went down to meet Elisha.

Elisha's Response

Upon their arrival, Elisha addressed King Jehoram with a rebuke, questioning why he did not seek the prophets of his parents, Ahab and Jezebel. However, Elisha agreed to help because of his respect for Jehoshaphat. He said, "As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, were it not for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you or acknowledge you" (2 Kings 3:14).

Elisha then called for a musician, and as the musician played, the hand of the LORD came upon Elisha. He delivered a prophetic message, instructing the kings to dig ditches in the valley, promising that the LORD would fill them with water without rain or wind. This miraculous provision would ensure the survival of the armies and lead to victory over Moab.

The Fulfillment

The next morning, water flowed from the direction of Edom, filling the land with water, just as Elisha had prophesied. The Moabites, seeing the water and mistaking it for blood, assumed the allied kings had turned against each other. They approached the camp of Israel, only to be defeated as the Israelites rose up and struck them down.

Significance

The Request for Elisha's Presence illustrates the importance of seeking God's guidance through His appointed prophets. It demonstrates God's faithfulness to His people and His willingness to intervene in seemingly impossible situations. The narrative also highlights the distinction between the faithfulness of Jehoshaphat and the idolatrous tendencies of Jehoram, emphasizing the blessings that come from aligning with God's will.
