Definition and Origin

True wisdom, as presented in the Bible, is a divine attribute and a gift from God, distinct from human knowledge or intelligence. It is characterized by a deep understanding of God's will and the ability to apply this understanding to life. The Bible emphasizes that true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, as stated in Proverbs 9:10 : "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."

Biblical Characteristics of True Wisdom

1. Fear of the Lord: True wisdom is rooted in reverence and awe for God. This foundational aspect is reiterated in Proverbs 1:7 : "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."

2. Moral and Ethical Living: True wisdom is reflected in righteous living and moral integrity. James 3:17 describes it as "pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere."

3. Humility: A wise person acknowledges their limitations and dependence on God. Proverbs 11:2 states, "When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom."

4. Discernment and Understanding: True wisdom involves the ability to discern right from wrong and to understand complex situations. Proverbs 2:6 affirms, "For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding."

5. Peace and Harmony: Wisdom fosters peace and unity among people. James 3:18 notes, "Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness."

Sources of True Wisdom

1. God's Word: The Bible is the primary source of wisdom, providing guidance and instruction. Psalm 119:105 declares, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

2. Prayer and Communion with God: Seeking wisdom through prayer is encouraged. James 1:5 promises, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him."

3. The Holy Spirit: The Spirit of God imparts wisdom to believers, guiding them in truth. 1 Corinthians 2:10-12 explains that the Spirit reveals the deep things of God.

4. Godly Counsel: Wisdom can also be gained through the counsel of mature believers. Proverbs 15:22 advises, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed."

Contrasts with Earthly Wisdom

The Bible contrasts true wisdom with earthly wisdom, which is often self-centered and limited. 1 Corinthians 3:19 states, "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight." Earthly wisdom is characterized by pride, envy, and selfish ambition, as described in James 3:14-16 .

Examples of True Wisdom in Scripture

1. Solomon: Known for his wisdom, Solomon asked God for an understanding heart to govern his people. 1 Kings 3:12 records God's response: "I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has never been anyone like you, nor will there ever be."

2. Jesus Christ: Jesus embodied perfect wisdom, teaching with authority and understanding. Colossians 2:3 affirms, "In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

3. The Apostles: The early church leaders demonstrated wisdom in their teachings and decisions, guided by the Holy Spirit. Acts 6:3 highlights the selection of deacons who were "full of the Spirit and wisdom."

Practical Application of True Wisdom

Believers are called to seek and apply true wisdom in their daily lives. This involves making decisions that align with God's will, living ethically, and promoting peace and understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages trust in God's wisdom: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
