Topical Encyclopedia
In the biblical context, offerings are acts of worship and devotion to God, serving as expressions of gratitude, atonement, and dedication. The nature of offerings in the Bible is multifaceted, encompassing various types and purposes as outlined in both the Old and New Testaments.

Old Testament Offerings

1. Burnt Offerings (Leviticus 1): The burnt offering, or "olah," was a voluntary act of worship, symbolizing the complete surrender to God. The offering was entirely consumed by fire, representing the offerer's total dedication. Leviticus 1:9 states, "The priest is to burn all of it on the altar as a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD."

2. Grain Offerings (Leviticus 2): Known as "minchah," these offerings consisted of fine flour, oil, and frankincense. They were a tribute to God, acknowledging His provision. Leviticus 2:2 describes, "The priest shall take a handful of the fine flour and oil, together with all the frankincense, and burn this memorial portion on the altar as an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD."

3. Peace Offerings (Leviticus 3): Also called "shelamim," these offerings were expressions of thanksgiving and fellowship. Part of the offering was consumed by fire, while the rest was shared in a communal meal. Leviticus 3:5 notes, "Then Aaron’s sons are to burn it on the altar, on top of the burnt offering that is on the burning wood, as an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD."

4. Sin Offerings (Leviticus 4): The sin offering, or "chatat," was required for atonement of unintentional sins. It emphasized the seriousness of sin and the need for purification. Leviticus 4:20 states, "He shall do with this bull just as he did with the bull of the sin offering; he shall do the same with it. Thus the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven."

5. Guilt Offerings (Leviticus 5): Known as "asham," these offerings addressed specific transgressions and required restitution. Leviticus 5:16 instructs, "He must make restitution for what he has failed to do in regard to the holy things, adding a fifth of the value to it and giving it to the priest. The priest will then make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and he will be forgiven."

New Testament Perspective

In the New Testament, the concept of offerings evolves with the advent of Jesus Christ, who is seen as the ultimate offering for sin. Hebrews 10:10 declares, "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." This signifies the fulfillment and culmination of the sacrificial system.

1. Spiritual Sacrifices: Believers are called to offer spiritual sacrifices, such as praise, good deeds, and sharing with others. Hebrews 13:15-16 encourages, "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess His name. And do not neglect to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased."

2. Living Sacrifices: Romans 12:1 exhorts believers, "Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship." This reflects a life dedicated to God, embodying the principles of the offerings in daily conduct.

The nature of offerings in the Bible underscores a relationship with God characterized by reverence, obedience, and heartfelt devotion. Through offerings, both ancient and spiritual, believers express their commitment to God and acknowledge His sovereignty and grace.
