The Nature of God

The nature of God is a central theme in Christian theology, encompassing His attributes, character, and essence as revealed in the Bible. God is described as eternal, omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. These attributes underscore His sovereignty and the foundational belief that He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things.

1. Eternality: God is eternal, existing outside of time and space. Psalm 90:2 declares, "Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God." This verse emphasizes God's timeless existence, affirming that He has no beginning or end.

2. Omnipotence: God's omnipotence is His unlimited power and authority over creation. Jeremiah 32:17 states, "Ah, Lord GOD! You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You." This power is evident in His ability to perform miracles and govern the universe.

3. Omniscience: God possesses complete and perfect knowledge. Psalm 147:5 proclaims, "Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit." God's omniscience means He knows all things, past, present, and future, and His wisdom is unsearchable.

4. Omnipresence: God is present everywhere at all times. Psalm 139:7-10 reflects this truth: "Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there." God's omnipresence assures believers of His constant companionship and support.

5. Holiness: God's holiness is His moral perfection and separation from sin. Isaiah 6:3 records the seraphim proclaiming, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; His glory fills the whole earth." God's holiness demands reverence and calls His people to live in righteousness.

6. Love: God's nature is fundamentally characterized by love. 1 John 4:8 states, "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." This love is sacrificial and unconditional, most clearly demonstrated in the sending of His Son, Jesus Christ, for the salvation of humanity (John 3:16).

The Nature of Truth

Truth, in the biblical context, is closely associated with the nature and character of God. It is absolute, unchanging, and revealed through God's Word and His Son, Jesus Christ.

1. God as the Source of Truth: God is the ultimate source of truth. Numbers 23:19 affirms, "God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?" God's truthfulness is inherent in His nature, ensuring that His promises and declarations are reliable.

2. The Word of God as Truth: The Bible is regarded as the authoritative and infallible Word of God. Jesus, in His prayer, states in John 17:17 , "Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth." Scripture serves as the ultimate guide for faith and practice, providing believers with divine wisdom and instruction.

3. Jesus Christ as the Embodiment of Truth: Jesus Christ is the personification of truth. In John 14:6 , Jesus declares, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." Through His life, teachings, and redemptive work, Jesus reveals the truth of God's nature and His plan for salvation.

4. The Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth: The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in guiding believers into all truth. John 16:13 states, "However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come." The Spirit illuminates the Scriptures and helps believers discern truth from falsehood.

5. Truth in the Life of Believers: Believers are called to live in accordance with God's truth. Ephesians 4:25 exhorts, "Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one another." Living truthfully reflects God's character and fosters unity within the body of Christ.
