The Nature of Enduring Works

The concept of enduring works is deeply rooted in biblical theology, emphasizing the lasting impact of actions and deeds that align with God's will. The Bible frequently contrasts temporary, earthly achievements with those that have eternal significance, urging believers to focus on works that endure beyond this life.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible underscores the importance of building one's life and works on a solid foundation. In 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 , the Apostle Paul writes, "For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive a reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss. He himself will be saved, but only as if through the flames." This passage highlights the distinction between works that endure and those that do not, emphasizing the necessity of building upon the foundation of Christ.

Characteristics of Enduring Works

1. Alignment with God's Will: Enduring works are those that align with God's purposes and commands. Jesus taught in Matthew 7:21 , "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven." This indicates that true, lasting works are those that reflect obedience to God's will.

2. Motivated by Love: The Apostle Paul emphasizes that love is the greatest of all virtues and the driving force behind enduring works. In 1 Corinthians 13:13 , he states, "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love." Works motivated by genuine love for God and others are those that have eternal value.

3. Empowered by the Holy Spirit: Enduring works are often characterized by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. In Galatians 5:22-23 , Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities, produced by the Spirit, lead to works that have lasting impact.

4. Rooted in Faith: Hebrews 11, often referred to as the "Faith Hall of Fame," illustrates how faith is integral to enduring works. Hebrews 11:6 states, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." Faith in God and His promises is foundational to works that endure.

Examples of Enduring Works in Scripture

1. Abraham's Obedience: Abraham's willingness to obey God's command to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22) is an enduring work of faith and obedience. His actions demonstrated trust in God's promises, and as a result, he became the father of many nations.

2. The Widow's Offering: In Mark 12:41-44 , Jesus commends a poor widow who gave two small coins, saying, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others." Her sacrificial giving, though small in monetary value, was an enduring work because it was given out of love and faith.

3. Paul's Ministry: The Apostle Paul's missionary journeys and epistles are enduring works that have had a profound impact on the spread of Christianity and the edification of the Church. His life exemplifies dedication to God's calling and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

The Temporal vs. the Eternal

The Bible frequently contrasts the temporal nature of earthly achievements with the eternal significance of works done for God's kingdom. In Matthew 6:19-20 , Jesus instructs, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." This teaching encourages believers to prioritize works that have eternal value over those that are fleeting.

Judgment and Reward

Scripture teaches that believers will be judged based on their works, and rewards will be given for those that endure. In 2 Corinthians 5:10 , Paul writes, "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad." This judgment is not for salvation, which is by grace through faith, but for the evaluation of one's works and the rewards that follow.

In summary, the nature of enduring works is characterized by alignment with God's will, motivation by love, empowerment by the Holy Spirit, and rootedness in faith. These works stand the test of time and contribute to the eternal purposes of God's kingdom.
