Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of "The Mighty Power and Great Terror" in the Bible often refers to the overwhelming and awe-inspiring presence of God, as well as His ability to execute judgment and deliverance. This theme is woven throughout the Scriptures, illustrating both the majesty and the fearsome nature of God's power.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the mighty power of God is frequently demonstrated through His acts of creation, deliverance, and judgment. One of the most vivid depictions is found in the Exodus narrative, where God delivers the Israelites from Egyptian bondage. In Exodus 15:6, the song of Moses declares, "Your right hand, O LORD, is majestic in power; Your right hand, O LORD, has shattered the enemy." This passage highlights God's power as both a source of salvation for His people and a force of destruction against their foes.

The great terror associated with God's power is also evident in the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai. In Exodus 19:16, the Israelites experience a profound sense of fear: "On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled." Here, the manifestation of God's presence is so intense that it instills terror in the hearts of the people, underscoring the holiness and unapproachable nature of God.

Prophetic Literature

The prophets often speak of God's mighty power and great terror in the context of His judgment upon nations and peoples. In Isaiah 13:6-9, the prophet warns of the "day of the LORD," a time characterized by divine wrath and destruction: "Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come as destruction from the Almighty. Therefore all hands will fall limp, and every heart will melt with fear." This passage reflects the dual aspects of God's power—His ability to save and to judge.

New Testament Revelation

In the New Testament, the mighty power of God is most fully revealed in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Through His miracles, Jesus demonstrates authority over nature, disease, and even death, affirming His divine power. In Matthew 8:27, after Jesus calms the storm, the disciples marvel, saying, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey Him!"

The great terror of God's power is also evident in the eschatological teachings of the New Testament. In Revelation 6:15-17, during the opening of the sixth seal, the inhabitants of the earth hide in fear from the wrath of the Lamb: "Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and free man hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. And they said to the mountains and the rocks, 'Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of Their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?'"

Theological Implications

The mighty power and great terror of God serve as a reminder of His sovereignty and holiness. They call believers to a posture of reverence and awe, recognizing that God is both a loving Savior and a righteous Judge. This duality encourages a life of obedience and worship, acknowledging that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).
