The Inhabitants of the World

The term "inhabitants of the world" in the Bible refers to all people living on the earth, encompassing every nation, tribe, and tongue. This concept is significant in understanding God's relationship with humanity, His expectations for human conduct, and His ultimate plan for redemption.

Creation and the Fall

The Bible begins with the creation of the world and its inhabitants. Genesis 1:27 states, "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." This foundational truth establishes the inherent dignity and worth of every human being. However, the fall of man, as described in Genesis 3, introduced sin into the world, affecting all its inhabitants. Romans 5:12 explains, "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned."

God's Sovereignty and Judgment

Throughout Scripture, God is depicted as sovereign over all the earth and its inhabitants. Psalm 24:1 declares, "The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein." This sovereignty includes the right to judge the inhabitants of the world. Isaiah 24:1-6 describes a time of judgment: "Behold, the LORD lays waste to the earth and leaves it in ruins; He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants."

The Call to Righteousness

Despite the pervasive nature of sin, God calls the inhabitants of the world to righteousness. In Micah 6:8, the prophet declares, "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" This call is universal, extending to all people regardless of their background or status.

The Great Commission

The New Testament expands on the theme of God's concern for all the inhabitants of the world through the Great Commission. Jesus commands His disciples in Matthew 28:19-20, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you." This directive underscores the global scope of the Gospel message and God's desire for all people to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

The End Times and New Creation

The Bible also speaks of a future time when God's plan for the inhabitants of the world will be fully realized. Revelation 7:9-10 envisions a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing before the throne of God, worshiping Him. This eschatological vision points to the ultimate redemption and restoration of humanity. Furthermore, Revelation 21:1-4 describes a new heaven and a new earth where God will dwell with His people, and "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Conclusion

The inhabitants of the world, as depicted in the Bible, are central to God's redemptive plan. From creation to the fall, through judgment and the call to righteousness, and ultimately to the promise of a new creation, the Scriptures reveal God's enduring love and purpose for all humanity.
