The Danger of Snares

Topical Encyclopedia
In biblical literature, the concept of "snares" is frequently used metaphorically to describe traps or pitfalls that can lead individuals away from righteousness and into sin. The imagery of a snare, a device used by hunters to catch animals, is employed to convey the subtle and often hidden nature of temptations and spiritual dangers.

Old Testament References

The Old Testament provides numerous warnings about the dangers of snares. In the book of Proverbs, the wise are cautioned against falling into traps set by the wicked: "The wicked man earns an empty wage, but he who sows righteousness reaps a true reward" (Proverbs 11:18). Here, the "empty wage" can be seen as a snare, a deceptive reward that ultimately leads to ruin.

The Psalms also speak to the danger of snares, often in the context of seeking divine protection. Psalm 91:3 assures believers of God's deliverance: "Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly plague" . This verse highlights the protective power of God against both physical and spiritual dangers.

In the historical books, the Israelites are repeatedly warned against the snares of idolatry and the practices of surrounding nations. Judges 2:3 records God's warning: "Therefore I now say, I will not drive them out before you; they will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you" . This illustrates how foreign influences and false gods can ensnare the hearts of God's people, leading them away from true worship.

New Testament Insights

The New Testament continues the theme of spiritual snares, emphasizing the need for vigilance and discernment. In 1 Timothy 6:9, Paul warns against the dangers of wealth: "Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation and become ensnared by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction" . Here, the pursuit of wealth is depicted as a snare that can lead to spiritual downfall.

Jesus Himself warns of the snares of the world in the Parable of the Sower. In Luke 8:14, He describes how the seed that falls among thorns is choked by life's worries, riches, and pleasures, preventing spiritual growth: "The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does not mature" .

Spiritual Warfare and Snares

The concept of snares is also integral to the understanding of spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:11 exhorts believers to "put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes" . The "schemes" of the devil can be likened to snares, as they are designed to entrap and lead believers away from their faith.

Practical Application

Believers are encouraged to remain vigilant and prayerful to avoid falling into snares. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight" . By relying on God's wisdom and guidance, Christians can navigate the snares of life and maintain their spiritual integrity.

The danger of snares, as depicted in the Bible, serves as a powerful reminder of the need for constant spiritual awareness and dependence on God. Through prayer, scripture, and the support of the Christian community, believers can resist the snares that threaten their walk with God.
