Topical Encyclopedia The concept of "The Coming Events" in biblical theology primarily refers to eschatological events, which are the series of occurrences prophesied to take place at the end of the age. These events are central to Christian eschatology and are derived from various passages throughout the Bible, particularly in the books of Daniel, Ezekiel, Zechariah, Matthew, Thessalonians, and Revelation. The Second Coming of Christ The Second Coming of Jesus Christ is a pivotal event in Christian eschatology. It is described as a visible and triumphant return of Jesus to earth. In Matthew 24:30 , Jesus Himself declares, "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory." This event is anticipated as a time when Christ will establish His kingdom and fulfill the promises made throughout Scripture. The Rapture The Rapture is a doctrine that describes the catching away of believers to meet the Lord in the air. This event is detailed in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 : "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord." The timing of the Rapture in relation to other end-time events is a subject of various interpretations within Christian theology. The Tribulation The Tribulation is a period of intense suffering and persecution that is prophesied to occur before the Second Coming of Christ. It is often associated with the "time of Jacob's trouble" mentioned in Jeremiah 30:7 and the "great tribulation" described in Matthew 24:21 : "For at that time there will be great tribulation, unmatched from the beginning of the world until now, and never to be seen again." This period is characterized by the rise of the Antichrist, widespread apostasy, and divine judgments upon the earth. The Antichrist and the Beast The Antichrist is a figure who will rise to power during the end times, opposing Christ and deceiving many. In 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 , Paul warns, "Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed. He will oppose and exalt himself above every so-called god or object of worship." The Book of Revelation also describes a "beast" who will exercise authority and demand worship (Revelation 13:1-8). The Battle of Armageddon The Battle of Armageddon is a climactic confrontation between the forces of good and evil, prophesied to occur at the end of the Tribulation. Revelation 16:16 states, "And they assembled the kings in the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon." This battle is seen as the final defeat of the Antichrist and his armies by Christ and His heavenly host. The Millennial Reign Following the defeat of the Antichrist, Christ is prophesied to establish a thousand-year reign of peace and righteousness on earth, known as the Millennium. Revelation 20:4 describes this period: "Then I saw thrones, and those seated on them had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image, and had not received its mark on their foreheads or hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years." The Final Judgment The Final Judgment is the ultimate assessment of humanity by God, where the righteous and the wicked are separated. Revelation 20:11-12 provides a vivid depiction: "Then I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And there were open books, and one of them was the book of life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books." The New Heaven and New Earth The culmination of the coming events is the creation of a new heaven and a new earth, where God will dwell with His people eternally. Revelation 21:1-3 describes this glorious future: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.'" |
