Old Testament Foundations

Genesis 3:15 is often cited as the protoevangelium, the first gospel, where God declares that the seed of the woman will crush the serpent's head, indicating a decisive victory over evil. The Psalms frequently echo this theme, portraying the Messiah as a conquering king. Psalm 2:7-9 states, "I will proclaim the decree spoken to Me by the LORD: 'You are My Son; today I have become Your Father. In 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 , Paul writes, "When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass: 'Death has been swallowed up in victory.' 'Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?' The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!"

Ephesians 1:20-22 describes how God "raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God put everything under His feet and made Him head over everything for the church."

The Ongoing Battle

While Christ's victory is assured, the New Testament acknowledges the ongoing spiritual battle that believers face. Ephesians 6:12 reminds Christians, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world's darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." The Final Victory

The book of Revelation provides a vivid depiction of Christ's ultimate victory. Revelation 19:11-16 portrays Christ as a rider on a white horse, called Faithful and True, who judges and wages war in righteousness. His robe is dipped in blood, and His name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven follow Him, and He rules with an iron scepter. Revelation 21:4 promises the consummation of this victory: "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away."

The certainty of Christ's victory has profound implications for believers. It provides hope and assurance in the face of trials and tribulations, knowing that Christ has overcome the world (John 16:33). It also calls believers to live in the light of this victory, striving for holiness and proclaiming the gospel with confidence, as they await the return of their victorious King.
