The Assurance of Relationship

The concept of the assurance of relationship in the Christian faith refers to the confidence and certainty believers have in their relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This assurance is rooted in the promises of Scripture and the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer's life.

Biblical Foundation

1. Divine Adoption: The assurance of relationship begins with the understanding that believers are adopted into the family of God. In Romans 8:15-16 , the Apostle Paul writes, "For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!' The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children." This passage highlights the intimate relationship believers have with God, characterized by the term "Abba," an Aramaic word for father, denoting closeness and trust.

2. Eternal Security: Assurance is also tied to the doctrine of eternal security, which posits that those who are truly saved will persevere in faith. John 10:28-29 states, "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand." This promise from Jesus underscores the security and permanence of the believer's relationship with God.

3. The Witness of the Spirit: The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in assuring believers of their relationship with God. Ephesians 1:13-14 explains, "And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory." The sealing of the Holy Spirit serves as a guarantee of the believer's inheritance and relationship with God.

4. Love and Obedience: Assurance is also evidenced through love and obedience to God's commandments. In 1 John 2:3-5 , it is written, "By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments. If anyone says, 'I know Him,' but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him." Obedience to God's word is a reflection of the believer's genuine relationship with Him.

5. Confidence in Prayer: The assurance of relationship is also reflected in the confidence believers have in approaching God in prayer. Hebrews 4:16 encourages believers, "Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." This confidence is rooted in the believer's relationship with God through Christ, who serves as the High Priest.

Practical Implications

The assurance of relationship with God provides believers with peace, joy, and confidence in their daily walk. It encourages them to live out their faith boldly, knowing that their identity and future are secure in Christ. This assurance also motivates believers to share the gospel, as they are confident in the transformative power of the relationship they have experienced.

Challenges to Assurance

While the assurance of relationship is a biblical promise, believers may face doubts and struggles. These can arise from personal sin, spiritual warfare, or external circumstances. Scripture encourages believers to seek God, immerse themselves in His word, and rely on the Holy Spirit to reaffirm their relationship with Him. James 4:8 offers this encouragement: "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you."
