Support for Elders

In the context of the Christian church, the term "elders" refers to those who hold positions of leadership and spiritual oversight within the congregation. The New Testament provides guidance on the role and support of elders, emphasizing their importance in maintaining the spiritual health and doctrinal integrity of the church.

Biblical Foundation

The role of elders is rooted in the early church's structure, as seen in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul, in his pastoral epistles, outlines the qualifications and responsibilities of elders. In 1 Timothy 5:17-18 , Paul writes, "Elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, 'Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,' and, 'The worker is worthy of his wages.'" This passage underscores the principle that elders, particularly those who labor in teaching and preaching, deserve respect and financial support from the congregation.

Qualifications and Responsibilities

Elders are expected to meet specific qualifications, as detailed in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. These qualifications include being above reproach, faithful to their spouse, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money. They must manage their own family well and see that their children obey them, and they must do so in a manner worthy of full respect.

The responsibilities of elders include shepherding the flock, teaching sound doctrine, and protecting the church from false teachings. In Acts 20:28 , Paul exhorts the Ephesian elders, "Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood."

Support and Honor

The New Testament emphasizes the importance of supporting and honoring elders. This support is not only financial but also involves respect and cooperation with their leadership. Hebrews 13:17 instructs believers, "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you."

The principle of honoring elders is also reflected in the Old Testament, where the concept of respecting and supporting leaders is a recurring theme. For instance, in Deuteronomy 25:4 , the command not to muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain is cited by Paul in the New Testament to illustrate the need for providing for those who labor in ministry.

Challenges and Considerations

While the biblical mandate to support elders is clear, practical challenges can arise within congregations. Issues such as financial constraints, differing interpretations of leadership roles, and personal conflicts can impact the level of support elders receive. It is crucial for church members to approach these challenges with prayer, seeking wisdom and unity in upholding the biblical standards for supporting their leaders.

In summary, the New Testament provides a comprehensive framework for the support and honor of elders within the church. By adhering to these biblical principles, congregations can ensure that their leaders are equipped and encouraged to fulfill their God-given responsibilities effectively.
