Quick-Tempered and Schemer

A quick-tempered individual is characterized by a propensity to become angry swiftly and often without sufficient provocation. The Bible frequently warns against such behavior, highlighting the spiritual and relational dangers it poses. Proverbs 14:17 states, "A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, and a devious man is hated." This verse underscores the foolishness associated with hasty anger, suggesting that it leads to actions that are regrettable and damaging.

The New Testament also addresses the issue of quick temper. James 1:19-20 advises, "My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man's anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires." Here, the emphasis is on the importance of self-control and the negative impact of anger on one's spiritual life.

In the context of leadership, the Apostle Paul instructs that an overseer must not be quick-tempered. Titus 1:7 states, "As God’s steward, an overseer must be above reproach—not self-absorbed, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not greedy for money." This requirement for church leaders highlights the broader biblical principle that quick temper is incompatible with godly leadership and maturity.

The Bible encourages believers to cultivate patience and self-control, virtues that stand in stark contrast to a quick temper. Proverbs 16:32 declares, "He who is slow to anger is better than a warrior, and he who controls his temper is greater than one who captures a city." This wisdom literature emphasizes the strength and honor found in mastering one's emotions.

Schemer

A schemer is someone who devises plans, often with deceitful or malicious intent. The Bible frequently condemns scheming, associating it with wickedness and folly. Proverbs 24:8 warns, "He who plots evil will be called a schemer." This verse indicates that scheming is inherently linked to evil intentions and is recognized as such by others.

The Psalms also speak against those who scheme. Psalm 37:12 notes, "The wicked scheme against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them." This passage highlights the opposition between the wicked and the righteous, with scheming being a tool of the wicked to harm those who are upright.

In the prophetic literature, Isaiah 32:7 describes the actions of a schemer: "The schemes of a fool are sinful; he devises wicked plans to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just." This verse illustrates the destructive nature of scheming, particularly against the vulnerable and innocent.

The New Testament also addresses the issue of scheming, particularly in the context of spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:11 instructs believers to "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes." Here, scheming is attributed to the devil, emphasizing its association with evil and the need for spiritual vigilance.

The Bible calls believers to live with integrity and honesty, rejecting deceitful practices. Proverbs 12:20 states, "Deceit is in the hearts of those who devise evil, but the counselors of peace have joy." This contrast between deceit and peace underscores the biblical call to pursue righteousness and truth.
