In the biblical context, the "Portion for the Priests" refers to the specific allocations and provisions designated for the Levitical priesthood as outlined in the Old Testament. These provisions were established by God to ensure that the priests, who were set apart for sacred duties and service in the Tabernacle and later the Temple, were adequately supported by the community of Israel.

Biblical Foundation

The concept of a portion for the priests is rooted in the covenantal relationship between God and the tribe of Levi. Unlike the other tribes of Israel, the Levites were not given a territorial inheritance in the Promised Land. Instead, their inheritance was the Lord Himself and the service of the Tabernacle (Numbers 18:20-21). As a result, the priests and Levites were to be sustained through the offerings and tithes of the people.

Tithes and Offerings

The primary means of support for the priests came from the tithes and offerings of the Israelites. According to Numbers 18:21, "Behold, I have given the Levites all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do—the work of the Tent of Meeting." The Levites, in turn, were required to offer a tenth of the tithes they received to the priests (Numbers 18:26-28).

In addition to tithes, the priests were entitled to specific portions of various offerings. Leviticus 7:31-34 outlines that the breast and the right thigh of the peace offerings were to be given to the priests. Furthermore, the priests received portions of the grain offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings (Leviticus 2:3, 6:26, 7:6-10).

Firstfruits and Other Provisions

The firstfruits of the harvest were also designated for the priests. As stated in Deuteronomy 18:3-5, "This shall be the priests’ share from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, whether an ox or a sheep: They are to give the priest the shoulder, the jowls, and the stomach. You are to give him the firstfruits of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the first wool sheared from your flock."

Additionally, the priests were provided with cities and pasturelands within the territories of the other tribes (Numbers 35:1-8). These cities served as their dwelling places and included surrounding lands for their livestock.

Role and Responsibility

The provision for the priests was not merely a matter of sustenance but also a recognition of their vital role in the spiritual life of Israel. The priests were responsible for performing sacrifices, maintaining the sanctity of the Tabernacle/Temple, teaching the Law, and interceding on behalf of the people. Their portion was a tangible acknowledgment of their service and dedication to God.

New Testament Perspective

While the specific Levitical system of priestly portions is not carried over into the New Testament, the principle of supporting those who minister in spiritual matters is affirmed. In 1 Corinthians 9:13-14, Paul draws a parallel, stating, "Do you not know that those who serve in the temple eat of its food, and those who attend to the altar share in the offerings? In the same way, the Lord has prescribed that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel."

The "Portion for the Priests" thus serves as a foundational concept in understanding the provision for spiritual leaders and the community's responsibility to support those dedicated to the service of God.
