Over-religious

The term "over-religious" is not explicitly found in the Bible, but it can be understood as an excessive or misguided zeal in religious practices, often at the expense of genuine faith and relationship with God. This concept is addressed in various biblical passages that caution against legalism, hypocrisy, and the elevation of human traditions over divine commandments.

Pharisees and Legalism

The Pharisees are often cited as examples of over-religious behavior in the New Testament. They were known for their strict adherence to the Law and additional traditions, which sometimes led to a focus on external observance rather than internal transformation. Jesus frequently rebuked them for their hypocrisy and legalism. In Matthew 23:23-24 , Jesus says, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay tithes of mint, dill, and cumin, but you have disregarded the weightier matters of the Law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel."

Traditions vs. Commandments

The issue of prioritizing human traditions over God's commandments is another aspect of being over-religious. In Mark 7:6-9 , Jesus addresses this by quoting Isaiah: "Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.' You have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men." This passage highlights the danger of allowing religious practices to overshadow the core principles of faith.

Heart Over Ritual

The Bible emphasizes the importance of the heart's condition over mere ritualistic observance. In 1 Samuel 16:7 , the Lord reminds Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart." This principle is echoed throughout Scripture, underscoring that God values sincerity and genuine devotion over superficial religiosity.

Warnings Against Hypocrisy

Jesus' teachings often include warnings against hypocrisy, which can be a byproduct of being over-religious. In Matthew 6:1 , He instructs, "Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven." This admonition serves as a reminder that religious acts should be motivated by a desire to honor God rather than to gain human approval.

Paul's Teachings on True Righteousness

The Apostle Paul also addresses the issue of over-religiousness, particularly in his letters to the early churches. In Philippians 3:8-9 , Paul writes, "More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness from God on the basis of faith." Paul emphasizes that true righteousness comes through faith in Christ, not through the works of the Law.

Conclusion

While the Bible encourages devotion and obedience to God's commands, it also warns against the pitfalls of over-religiousness, where external observance takes precedence over a heartfelt relationship with God. Believers are called to pursue a faith that is genuine, humble, and centered on the love and grace of God, avoiding the trappings of legalism and hypocrisy.
