Order

In the biblical context, "order" often refers to the arrangement, organization, and structure that God has established in creation, society, and worship. The concept of order is foundational to understanding God's nature and His expectations for His people.

1. Creation: The Bible begins with the account of creation, where God brings order out of chaos. Genesis 1:1-2 states, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." Through a series of divine commands, God organizes the cosmos, establishing a pattern of days and nights, seasons, and life forms, each according to its kind.

2. Society and Governance: Order is also evident in the structure of society and governance. Romans 13:1-2 instructs, "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God." This passage underscores the belief that God ordains societal structures to maintain peace and justice.

3. Worship and Church Life: In the New Testament, order is emphasized in the context of worship and church life. 1 Corinthians 14:40 advises, "But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner." This directive ensures that worship services are conducted in a way that edifies the congregation and honors God.

4. Moral and Ethical Order: The Bible also presents a moral and ethical order, encapsulated in the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Jesus. This order reflects God's holy standards and provides a framework for righteous living.

Holiness

Holiness is a central theme in Scripture, reflecting God's pure and perfect nature and His call for His people to be set apart for His purposes.

1. God's Holiness: The holiness of God is a defining attribute, emphasizing His transcendence and moral perfection. Isaiah 6:3 declares, "And they were calling out to one another: 'Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.'" This thrice-repeated declaration underscores the absolute holiness of God.

2. Call to Holiness: God's people are called to reflect His holiness in their lives. Leviticus 19:2 commands, "Speak to the entire congregation of the Israelites and tell them: 'Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.'" This call is reiterated in the New Testament, where 1 Peter 1:15-16 states, "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

3. Holiness in Conduct: Holiness involves a lifestyle that is distinct from the world, characterized by obedience to God's commands and a commitment to purity. Romans 12:1 urges believers, "Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship."

4. Sanctification: The process of becoming holy, known as sanctification, is a work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 explains, "For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality; each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor."

Order and holiness are intertwined in the biblical narrative, reflecting God's character and His desire for His creation to mirror His divine nature. Through adherence to God's established order and pursuit of holiness, believers are called to live lives that honor and glorify Him.
