Jesus, the Christ: Priesthood of: Blesses

The priesthood of Jesus Christ is a central theme in Christian theology, emphasizing His role as the ultimate mediator between God and humanity. One of the key aspects of His priesthood is His ability to bless, a function that is deeply rooted in His divine nature and His fulfillment of Old Testament priestly roles.

Blessing as a Priestly Function

In the Old Testament, the role of the priest included pronouncing blessings upon the people. This is exemplified in the Aaronic blessing found in Numbers 6:24-26 : "The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace." Jesus, as the ultimate High Priest, fulfills and transcends this role by offering blessings that are eternal and spiritual in nature.

Jesus Blesses the Children

One of the most poignant examples of Jesus blessing others is found in the Gospels, where He blesses the children. In Mark 10:16 , it is written, "And He took the children in His arms, placed His hands on them, and blessed them." This act demonstrates His love and care for the innocent and His desire to impart divine favor and protection upon them.

The Beatitudes

The Sermon on the Mount, particularly the Beatitudes, is another instance where Jesus pronounces blessings. In Matthew 5:3-12 , Jesus declares blessings upon those who exhibit certain virtues, such as the poor in spirit, the meek, and the peacemakers. These blessings are not merely temporal but point to the eternal rewards in the kingdom of heaven.

The Blessing of Peace

After His resurrection, Jesus appears to His disciples and offers them peace, a profound blessing that signifies reconciliation with God and the assurance of His presence. In John 20:19 , Jesus says, "Peace be with you." This blessing of peace is a hallmark of His priestly ministry, providing comfort and assurance to His followers.

The Ascension Blessing

As Jesus ascends into heaven, He continues His priestly role by blessing His disciples. Luke 24:50-51 records, "When He had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them. While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven." This final act of blessing underscores His ongoing intercessory role and His promise to be with His followers through the Holy Spirit.

The Eternal Blessing

The book of Hebrews elaborates on the eternal nature of Christ's priesthood, emphasizing that His blessings are not limited by time or space. Hebrews 7:24-25 states, "But because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. Therefore, He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them." This eternal intercession is the ultimate blessing, offering salvation and eternal life to all who believe.

Through His priesthood, Jesus Christ embodies the perfect mediator who blesses His people with grace, peace, and eternal life, fulfilling the promises of God and establishing a new covenant with humanity.
