The concept of righteousness is central to the identity and mission of Jesus Christ as depicted in the Bible. Righteousness, in the biblical sense, refers to the quality of being morally right or justifiable, and it is a key attribute of God. Jesus, as the Christ, embodies this divine righteousness, fulfilling the law and the prophets, and offering His righteousness to believers.

1. The Righteous One: Jesus is often referred to as "The Righteous One," highlighting His sinless nature and perfect obedience to the will of the Father. In Acts 3:14, Peter addresses the people of Israel, saying, "You rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be released to you." This title underscores Jesus' unique status as the only one who is truly righteous in Himself.

2. The Lord Our Righteousness: In the Old Testament, the prophet Jeremiah foretells the coming of a righteous branch from David's line, who will be called "The LORD Our Righteousness" (Jeremiah 23:6). This title is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who, through His life, death, and resurrection, becomes the source of righteousness for all who believe in Him. His righteousness is imputed to believers, allowing them to stand justified before God.

3. The Righteous Judge: Jesus is also depicted as the Righteous Judge, who will return to judge the living and the dead. In 2 Timothy 4:8, Paul writes, "From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing." This title emphasizes Jesus' authority and fairness in judgment, as well as His role in rewarding those who have lived faithfully.

4. The Righteous Servant: Isaiah 53:11 speaks of the suffering servant, saying, "After the anguish of His soul, He will see the light of life and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant will justify many, and He will bear their iniquities." This prophetic passage points to Jesus as the Righteous Servant who, through His sacrificial death, justifies many by bearing their sins.

5. The Sun of Righteousness: In Malachi 4:2, the coming of the Messiah is described with the imagery of the "Sun of Righteousness" rising with healing in its wings. This metaphor portrays Jesus as the source of spiritual light and healing, dispelling the darkness of sin and bringing righteousness to those who fear His name.

6. The King of Righteousness: Hebrews 7:2 refers to Melchizedek as "king of righteousness," a title that prefigures Christ. Jesus, as the eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek, is the ultimate King of Righteousness, reigning with justice and truth.

Through these titles and appellations, the Bible presents Jesus Christ as the embodiment and source of righteousness. His life and work fulfill the righteous requirements of the law, and through faith in Him, believers are granted His righteousness, enabling them to live in right relationship with God.
