Topical Encyclopedia MosesMoses is one of the most pivotal figures in the Bible, serving as the leader who delivered the Israelites from Egyptian bondage and guided them through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. Born to Hebrew parents during a time of severe oppression, Moses' early life was marked by divine intervention. Pharaoh had decreed that all Hebrew male infants be killed, but Moses was hidden by his mother and later discovered by Pharaoh's daughter, who raised him as her own (Exodus 2:1-10). Moses' life can be divided into three distinct periods: his upbringing in Egypt, his time in Midian, and his leadership of Israel. After killing an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew slave, Moses fled to Midian, where he encountered God in the form of a burning bush on Mount Horeb (Exodus 3:1-6). It was here that God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt, revealing His name as "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14). The Exodus The Exodus is the central event in the Old Testament, marking the birth of Israel as a nation. Under God's command, Moses returned to Egypt to confront Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites. Pharaoh's heart was hardened, leading to a series of ten plagues that demonstrated God's power over the Egyptian gods (Exodus 7-12). The final plague, the death of the firstborn, led to the institution of the Passover, a lasting ordinance for Israel (Exodus 12:14). Following the plagues, Pharaoh relented, and the Israelites departed Egypt. However, Pharaoh soon pursued them, leading to the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea. As Moses stretched out his hand, the waters parted, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground, while the pursuing Egyptian army was drowned (Exodus 14:21-28). The Wilderness Journey After the Exodus, the Israelites began their journey through the wilderness. Despite witnessing God's mighty acts, they frequently complained and rebelled. At Mount Sinai, God established a covenant with Israel, giving them the Ten Commandments and other laws to govern their society (Exodus 19-20). Moses served as the mediator between God and the people, spending forty days on the mountain in God's presence (Exodus 24:18). The journey to the Promised Land was marked by challenges, including a lack of food and water, which God miraculously provided (Exodus 16-17). The Israelites' disobedience led to a prolonged wandering in the wilderness for forty years, during which an entire generation perished (Numbers 14:29-34). Moses' Leadership and Legacy Moses' leadership was characterized by humility and faithfulness. Despite his initial reluctance and personal shortcomings, he was a faithful servant of God, interceding for the people and guiding them according to God's commands. Moses' relationship with God was unique; he spoke with God "face to face, as a man speaks with his friend" (Exodus 33:11). Before entering the Promised Land, Moses delivered a series of speeches, known as the Book of Deuteronomy, reiterating the law and urging the Israelites to remain faithful to God. He appointed Joshua as his successor and ascended Mount Nebo, where he viewed the Promised Land before his death (Deuteronomy 34:1-5). Moses is remembered as a prophet, lawgiver, and leader, whose life and work foreshadowed the coming of Jesus Christ, the ultimate deliverer. His faithfulness and obedience to God set a standard for all believers, and his account continues to inspire faith and trust in God's promises.
