Modesty

Modesty, in the biblical context, refers to the virtue of humility and decency in behavior, speech, and dress. It is an attitude of the heart that reflects a desire to honor God and respect others. The Bible encourages believers to exhibit modesty as a reflection of their inner spiritual state.

In 1 Timothy 2:9-10, the Apostle Paul instructs women to dress modestly, emphasizing that their adornment should not be merely external but should reflect godliness: "Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves with respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess to worship God." This passage highlights that modesty is not just about clothing but also about the character and actions that accompany one's appearance.

Modesty is also linked to the concept of self-control, a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). It involves exercising restraint and wisdom in how one presents oneself, avoiding actions or attire that might lead others to stumble or be distracted from a focus on God. Humility

Humility is a foundational Christian virtue that involves recognizing one's own limitations and dependence on God. It is the opposite of pride and arrogance, and it is essential for a right relationship with God and others. The Bible consistently calls believers to cultivate humility as a reflection of Christ's character.

Philippians 2:3-4 exhorts believers to "do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." This passage underscores the selfless nature of humility, which prioritizes the well-being of others and seeks to serve rather than be served.

Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of humility. In Philippians 2:5-8, Paul describes how Jesus, though being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped. Instead, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant and humbling Himself to the point of death on a cross. This profound act of humility serves as a model for believers to follow.

James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 both remind believers that "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Humility is essential for receiving God's grace and favor. It involves a posture of submission to God's will and an acknowledgment of one's need for His guidance and strength.

In the Old Testament, humility is also highly valued. Micah 6:8 summarizes what God requires of His people: "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" Walking humbly with God involves living in a way that honors Him and reflects His character in all aspects of life.
