Lot Casting

Topical Encyclopedia
Lot casting is an ancient practice mentioned frequently in the Bible, used to discern God's will or make decisions. This method involves the use of objects, such as stones or pieces of wood, which are cast to determine a decision or outcome. The practice is rooted in the belief that God sovereignly controls the outcome, thus revealing His will through the casting of lots.

Old Testament Usage

In the Old Testament, lot casting is often associated with the allocation of land, the selection of individuals for specific tasks, and the determination of guilt or innocence. One of the most notable instances is the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel. In Joshua 18:10 , it is recorded, "Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh in the presence of the LORD, and there he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their divisions."

Another significant use of lot casting is found in the account of Jonah. When a violent storm threatened the ship he was on, the sailors cast lots to determine who was responsible for the calamity. Jonah 1:7 states, "Come, let us cast lots, so we may know who is to blame for this calamity that is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah."

The practice is also seen in the selection of the scapegoat on the Day of Atonement. Leviticus 16:8 describes how Aaron was to cast lots over two goats, "one lot for the LORD and the other for the scapegoat."

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, the casting of lots is notably used in the selection of Matthias as an apostle to replace Judas Iscariot. Acts 1:26 records, "Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles." This event underscores the early church's reliance on divine guidance in decision-making.

Theological Significance

Lot casting in the Bible is seen as a means of seeking divine guidance and ensuring impartiality in decision-making. Proverbs 16:33 reflects this belief: "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD." This verse highlights the understanding that while humans may cast the lot, the outcome is determined by God.

The practice underscores the sovereignty of God in the affairs of men, demonstrating that even seemingly random events are under His control. It also reflects a trust in God's providence and His ability to guide His people through various means.

Cultural and Historical Context

In the ancient Near East, lot casting was a common practice not only among the Israelites but also among other cultures. It was often used in legal and religious contexts to make decisions that required impartiality and divine insight. The objects used for casting lots varied, but the underlying principle was consistent: the belief that the divine will could be discerned through this practice.

Modern Reflections

While lot casting is not commonly practiced in contemporary Christian decision-making, its biblical usage serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking God's guidance in all aspects of life. It encourages believers to trust in God's sovereignty and to seek His will through prayer, Scripture, and the counsel of the Holy Spirit.
